How To Find And Live Your Dreams (by Dr Bruce Wilkinson)

How to Find and Live your Dreams

“I’d rather attempt something great and fail…
than try nothing and succeed.”
– inspiring words from Norman Vincent Peale
(US preacher and author)

Author’s Note:
This article was largely based upon a most inspiring adress by Dr Bruce Wilkinson as aired on the TV program, The Hour of Power in New Zealand on TV3 many years ago. Though it is quite “religious” (and no matter what the concept of God, or a Higher Power/ Supreme Being means to you), I have personalised some of the information and applied the principles to my own life (with a dash of humour), as in this piece.

The Rev Robert Schuller has been a great inspiration and “mentor” to me in following my personal dream for many years and I’m sharing this piece with the hope and in the spirit of inspiring other people to follow their personal dreams. That is my ‘mission’ and dream!

What would you do with your life, if you KNEW that you COULD NOT FAIL?

What dream did you carry in your heart when you were a child?

Perhaps it was to be a fireman, a nurse, a policeman, an actor, a footballer, racing driver, a musician or perhaps even a writer (“oh no”!)… but definitely NOT an “insurance man”!

What is your soul telling you to aim for in your life TODAY?

I believe that many dreams (big or small) start in prayer – in close communion with the Source of Life, the One who knows us best, our Creator, God, the Infinite Spirit of the Universe.
HOW does this happen?

With FAITH and “possibility thinking”. And “heaps” of prayer. Prayer changes our thoughts into another, a higher (loftier) DIMENSION – the SPIRITUAL. It’s a change of CONSCIOUSNESS Another analogy may be like this: Just as we live, work and play in the “real world”, we can also operate a business or touch lives in another realm, the “world of cyberspace”, as I’m hopefully doing in sharing this article). In moments of meditation and prayer (spiritual awareness) our Higher Self connects with the divine, a Force/Being/Spirit far Greater than ourselves – our spirit connects with Infinite (Divine) Spirit; so that we draw on an Higher Power with unlimited potential… the power of God, the Essence of Life, or as Napoleon Hill termed ‘Infinite Intelligence’.

And God, Infinite Spirit, a Deity, the Ground of all Being, I believe, communicates through the conduit (medium or channel) of our subconscious minds. My “very analytical scientific” friend, Andy (a micro-biologist) calls it the ” ‘God-gate’ to Infinite Intelligence, the Great Designer”. We then just have to use our tools of BELIEF (faith) and ask the right questions. EXPECT an answer to our questions, a solution to our life problems (even many big ones, like mine!). TRUST the process, then leave to ‘Invisible Intelligence, Infinite Spirit to work things out for you – the best way possible to move forward. Just relax and allow the Universe’s Infinite Wisdom to send you the right answers: the Almighty , the Grand Designer of Life WILL.

Here are some good points made by Dr Wilkinson…

* I truly believe that God, the Great Dream Giver, the Ultimate Source, the Ground of our very Being also has a dream for every life and especially YOUR life.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…
Before you were born, I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

and the big dreamers are the ones who’ll change the world…
so making it a better place for ALL.

* The secret of the dream: you never know how you’re going to do it before you COMMIT to doing it.

* When God gives you a dream in your heart, it is always too big for you to do…ALONE. So you need a “Partner”. A “Co-creator”. It seems overwhelming at first – impossible, way out of your reach; yet somehow it gets achieved. No, not achieved…but surpassed.

“The dreams of great dreamers are never achieved; but with God’s help are always transcended – into true miracles…beyond one’s wildest dreams.”

* Your dream is at the centre of who you really are: It’s the ‘essence’ of who you are as a person – the core of your very BEING. The dream of God is the reason for the way you are – it drives you and gives a sense of meaning and purpose to your life: to follow your unique destiny.

* The dream is always outside your comfort zone. (I thought mine was impossible (and “crazy”), from where I was (“never in a million years”). However, even our “big-little” dreams fit perfectly into God’s bigger plan, His Grand Dream for the Universe. So make your dreams big enough for God to fit in.

“Lord, Reveal Your power and somehow fit my “little” dream, my ‘little’ life into Your grand plan for this world.”

* When you start out tentatively, don’t focus on the fear – focus on the dream. Then the dream becomes more important than the fear.

* Dreams happen when you accept the fact that the dream is your calling, something YOU simply HAVE to do to fulfil you. COMMIT fully to it. Say: “I don’t know HOW I’ll do it, but God will give me the way, if I just proceed and follow the dream. Just DEPEND on God, the Essence of Life to accomplish the “seemingly impossible”! Take that first step in FAITH; then watch what happens.

I have absolutely “zilch” idea where my journey is leading, but in “partnership with the Ultimate Source” guiding me each step of the way, it’s tremendously exciting, sliding down “the rapids”, er sorry, “waterfalls of life”.

It’s the will of God, our Creator, that we follow our personal dreams – fulfilling God’s dream is what we have been made to do, based on our skills, talents, gifts and aspirations. In short, our unique personas, who we are as ‘human beans’. It’s our unique calling in life: to do what we are DESTINED to do and it usually involves helping (serving) others, ie. meeting a human need to help others or make their lives easier or better in some way. I believe the key is making some contribution, however small we may think it is, to the betterment of humanity.

“All of us can become great, because we can all SERVE.”
– Martin Luther King (or was it Mother Teresa…or both??)

CHOOSE to follow your dream; because, if you don’t, do you realise how many people will be affected? Because a dream often lies in helping someone else’s dream, or helping them towards achieving it. It is God’s dream and consequently can never be selfish.

All dreams start in FAITH, but ones faith gets strengthened as you take one step after the next (one gets “led”). Faith really works and it get’s stronger by the day, when you look back and see how far you’ve come along the path.

Never give up on your unique calling, YOUR dream, Say, “I will UNTIL.” Finally , when you feel stuck in moving ahead with your dream…once you’ve done all you can, SURRENDER your dream to God, the “Ground of All Being, Truth, Goodness and Joy”.

“Let go, let God, let good.”

My dream in sharing this piece is hopefully helping others to fulfil their potentials, their individual dreams through encouragement (and perhaps upliftment). You can’t imagine the more you pursue the dream, the more God, the Grand Designer of Life, is going to use you in ways you never imagined possible. I am continually amazed at what we’re doing each day…from what started out as the seed of a vision twelve long years ago (when I had no idea how to turn on a computer!). Though many times facing innumerable obstacles and often feeling stuck, I simply surrendered my dream to God, the Universe. Then I’d get some insight or somehow the Universe, Essence of Life, Infinite Spirit would just move me ahead and open up a path for the vision. “Co-incidences?” This journey is a true ‘miracle’ in action, I believe, that so many people around the globe are involved and helping me greatly, as one person can’t do it alone. (Thanks so much, all of you for your many skills and gifts that I don’t have – you know who you are and also that I’m a total “non-techno wally”!). Once you embark on God’s dream for your life, watch the way the Universe brings people into your life to help you and to expand the vision (because you can’t do it alone). Also my faith is considerably strengthened each day, as I see the process DOES work…and one can see how far you’ve come from those tentative first steps. I’m greatly enjoying this most enjoyable and exciting journey, as I follow my personal dream(s).

After that little personal interlude… to continue with Dr Wilkinson’s message in a few final words…

*

You’re never too old and you’re never too young to dream big dreams!

Will you go through life one day regretting that you DARED TO DREAM?
Will you too surrender to your personal (“impossible”) dream?
Absolutely NOTHING is impossible* (I can certainly vouch for that!).

“It’s kinda fun to do the impossible.”
-anon

“It always seems impossible…

until it get’s done.”

– Nelson Mandela

All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

– Walt Disney

“Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable and
receives the impossible.”
– Corrie Ten Boom

Always remember,
God’s dreams are far bigger than you could have imagined yourself.

Just TRUST God, the Essence of Life, the Ground of Our Being, Ultimate Source and enjoy the journey towards your dreams. Absolutely NOTHING is impossible. Just BELIEVE in your dream.
You CAN do ANYTHING with God’s help (just live in an attitude of dependence) and your individual journeys can be used to honour the infinite love of our Creator.

So how about doing something about following your passion and pursuing your dream TODAY?

We then just have to use our tools of BELIEF (
faith) and ask the right questions.

“Let go, let God, let good.”

*

I have absolutely “zilch” idea where my journey is leading, but in “partnership (as a “co-worker”) with (and totally depending upon) the Ultimate Source” guiding me each step of the way, it’s tremendously exciting, sliding down “the rapids”, er sorry, “waterfalls of life”.

“Lord, I can’t…but You can!”

Also my faithis considerably strengthened each day, as I see the process DOES work…and one can see how far you’ve come from those tentative first steps.

Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable and
receives the impossible.”

I was really impacted by his words, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to reflect, remember, and learn from this man whose life is commemorated today.

Martin Luther King’s Drum Major Instinct Sermon

Jan 16

“If you want to say I was a drum major, say I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.”
– Dr Martin Luther King, jnr

From http://echoesofthemyth.com/2012/01/16/mlks-drum-major-instinct/

In my morning devotions today, I decided to read a sermon of Dr. Martin Luther King’s along with my Daily Office reading. (A few months ago, I bought a collection of Rev. King’s sermons and writings to read periodically.) I stumbled upon a sermon called, “The Drum Major Instinct”. It’s one of his more well-known sermons especially because excerpts of it were read at his funeral – you’ll see why in just a moment. I was really impacted by his words, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to reflect, remember, and learn from this man whose life is commemorated today.

Preaching from Mark 10:35-45, Rev. King points out the tragedy of John and James’ request for greatness. He calls it the drum major instinct – the universal human desire that all of us have to be out front, to lead the parade, a desire to be first. Even from birth, we are just little bundles of ego. We love to hear people praise us, talk about us, and reinforce our worth. We want to be superior, and we will use people or obliterate people to feel that way. Left unchecked, Rev. King noted that this instinct can become very dangerous. He observed the drum major instinct at work in social circles where people jockey for standing by living outside their means. He saw it at work in criminals who want to be known; in advertisers who want you to buy their product; among nations who war against each other in a battle for supremacy; and among races that want to feel superior simply based on the color of skin.

He even saw the drum major instinct at work in the church. I love how he responded to this instinct when manifested in the church:

And the church is the one place where a doctor ought to forget that he’s a doctor. The church is the one place where a Ph.D. ought to forget that he’s a Ph.D. The church is the one place that a schoolteacher ought to forget the degree she has behind her name. The church is the one place where the lawyer ought to forget that he’s a lawyer. And any church that violates the ‘whosoever will, let him come’ doctrine is a dead, cold church, and nothing but a little social club with a thin veneer of religiosity.

The truly startling thing about Rev. King’s sermon was how he described Jesus’ response to James and John’s request, and its application to us. He noted that Jesus didn’t call out their selfishness or deny them. Instead, Jesus redefined greatness. True greatness comes not by favouritism, but by fitness. What follows is one of his most quoted excerpts (but this time in its proper context!)

And so Jesus gave us a new norm of greatness. If you want to be important – wonderful. If you want to be recognized – wonderful. If you want to be great – wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That’s your new definition of greatness. And this morning, the thing that I like about it…by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great. Because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve…You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.

Rev. King goes on to describe the impact of Jesus as a humble servant on the whole of humanity. The way down is actually the way up. The key impact this sermon had on me was that Rev. King inspires me not to seek passive humility, but rather actively pursue the things of the heart of God now by serving. And in so doing, to pursue greatness in the kingdom by being the servant of all. I’ll close with his closing to the sermon. I think it’s a fitting and prophetic voice on this Martin Luther King Day 2012.

I’d like somebody to mention [at my funeral], that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I’d like for somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry. And I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try, in my life, to clothe those who were naked. I want you to say, on that day, that I did try, in my life, to visit those who were in prison. I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.

God, guard us from the ‘me-first’, empty glorying, YouTube celeb status-seeking, rockstar worshiping, first in line, VIP desiring drum major instinct. Raise up drum majors who take the Gospel and its implications seriously, but not ourselves too seriously. Give us a holy ambition that seeks greatness in the kingdom by serving the socks off people!!!

Happy Martin Luther King Day, friends…

I love these words from Marianne Williamson as used by Nelson Mandela in his inaugeration speech as State President at South Africa’s first Democratic Election in 1994. And I have added a few lines of my own…

“Deep within us there is a flame that burns, and that flame is the spark of God. In some it burns brightly, in others it is barely distinguishable; but always it burns…and with love and acceptance the flame gets higher and brighter. We can help others to kindle this flame by seeing the good in them, even if they don’t see it themselves.”

“We share what we know, so that we all may grow.” # “SAY ‘YES’ TO YOUR POTENTIAL” (Part One)

Introduction: Craig has been studying the amazing powers of the human mind, as well as the “secrets of success” for the past two decades. This article (in point form for brevity) is largely based on my notes from a most inspiring and uplifting book by an American by the name, “Skip” Ross from many years ago (however the principles, I believe, are eternal truths). I am sharing this summary, the contents of the Amway man’s work in the spirit of encouraging and hopefully even inspiring those people, who really want to reach their full potentials, achieving their dreams in life, whatever they may be “to just GO FOR IT”.

Thank you sincerely, “Skip” and Carole for sharing (with humour) your most uplifting words of wisdom in encouraging me to follow my passion and to reach for my personal dreams. I (in turn) am passing them on through the amazing power of the www, as my dream is helping others to realise their personal dreams in life.

Now on the article (at long last!)…

* SAY ‘YES’ TO YOUR POTENTIAL (PART ONE) by ‘SKIP’ ROSS (with Carole C.Carlson)

Skip Ross’s Magic Formula for Dynamic Living unfolds the secrets of a life filled with joy and happiness.

Here are 10 universal principles that can be the key to unlocking your full potential. The PRINCIPLES of:

1. GIVING: Give and you receive… and EVERYONE has something to give.

2. EXCLUSION: Get rid of what you don’t want to make room for what you do want to flow into your life.

3. CREATION: Decide what you want, define it clearly, then write it down.

4. VISUALISATION: Get a clear mental picture of your most earnest desires, fill it with emotion and hold onto it.

5. COMMAND: Whatever you speak, that’s what is going to happen. So watch out what you say!

6. ACTION: DO it NOW!

7. FAITH: The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith tears down walls and builds bridges of hope. But how does this apply in a practical sense?

8. ENTHUSIASM: Give everything you’ve got to everything you do.

9. SELF DISCIPLINE: Do what needs to be done, when it should be done, whether you like it or not.

10. PERSISTENCE. Say. “I will…until”.

“You are today what you want to be.” We use only 10 of our potential – the other 90 “might have been”. We have been endowed by God with incredible abilities, that if tapped would produce a dynamic style of life.

* You are a genius.

* GIVE and you receive far more.

* Turn your dreams into reality: What is your burning desire?

* SPEAK your most earnest desires into existence: Verbalise your future, as this releases energy.

* BELIEVE it before you see it.

* Do it UNTIL.

* *

THE STEPS:

1. Understand the source of your self image.

2. Believe your self image can be changed.

3. Decide what kind of person you WANT to be.

4. Write it (this picture/image) down.

5. Spend time with the person you want to be…this is the challenge.

6. Whatever a person focuses their thoughts on becomes reality in their life. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” – Proverbs

“God gives us each day to use as we will. When tomorrow comes this day will be gone forever, leaving something in its place we have traded for it. The day can be used for gain, not loss, for good, not evil, for success, not failure. We can waste time worrying about what might happen, or fretting about what did happen. If we want time, we have to make it.”

“The measure of our accomplishments in life is not a measure of time that we have to do things; but it’s a measure of what we do with the time we have, with the talents we have.”

Louis Pascal once said: “Our achievements of today are but the sum total of our thoughts of yesterday. You are today where the thoughts of yesterday have brought you and you will be tomorrow, where the thoughts of today take you.”

You can be a different kind of person, you can be any kind of person you choose (really) to be. You are responsible for your own attitudes and the kind of life you are living. There are two kinds of people: positive and negative. Always be open – reasons why things change – we tend to seek the comfort of the familiar; therefore change is painful and we tend to resist it.

” I’m planting a seed like a farmer. I challenge you to do more than you have ever done before in your life, to be more than you have ever dreamed you could be. To do more than you thought you could do, I’m challenging you to become ALL you were created to be. I know it’s possible. I became more than what I was ” – “Skip” Ross.

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.”

Your dreams can become reality and you can become all you were created to be.

BE happy and have great fun along the journey

Craig Lock (Eagle Productions NZ: “Information and Inspiration Distributors, Incorrigible Encouragers and People-builders”) )

“True success is just being the person you really want to be.”

“The task ahead of you can always be overcome by the power within you…and the often seemingly difficult or even “impassible”) path ahead of you is never as steep with the great spirit that lies within you.”
