Submitter’s Note:

This information that I’m sharing is sourced from an excellent and insightful book titled ‘TOMORROW’S GOD’ by Neale Donald Walsch (published by Hodder and Stoughton, a division of Hodder Headline).

I have taken what I feel to be the main points, directly as they appeared in Chapter Twelve of Walsch’s thought-provoking great new book (together with a few additional points of my own – in brackets). Hope this piece (including a few thoughts of my own in brackets) may be of interest to you too.

THE JESUS FACTOR

(from ‘TOMORROW’S GOD’ by Neale Donald Walsch)

“Slowly and gradually, out of a rich experience of the world, one builds a faith.”

God and I are one! That is, God is within each one of us. Jesus taught that we and God are One, but that no one wanted to believe it; because it did not serve the human agenda. Jesus was and is a saviour to all humankind. He knew Who He Really Was and his mission. So he declared it, his sense of mission and ‘unity of purpose’ for all to hear.

He declared something else. He said that what he did on the earth, we could also do. By elevating and expanding His consciousness, together with a high level of FAITH is the key to experiencing these gifts. That was the central message that Jesus taught.

“According to your faith, be it unto you.”
“Oh woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” And the woman’s daughter was made whole from that very hour!
“If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, ‘Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you.”
– Jesus’s words

Still if we cannot believe in ourselves and in our own divine heritage (and because so many people cannot), Jesus in an act of enormous love and compassion, invites us to believe in Him. (That was why He invited us, gently, to go to God, the Creator of the Universe THROUGH Him.)

“Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth in me, the works that I do, shall he also do; and greater works than these he shall do, because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I WILL do it.”

This was an extra-ordinary promise. So great and so complex was Jesus’s understanding of who He was and of who we are (“I and my Father are one“). He knew deeply that there was no limit to what we could do, if we believed in ourselves, or in Him.

(Read ‘The Magic of Believing’ by Claude Bristol)

So great was His love for all humankind, and so full was his compassion for their suffering, that he called upon Himself to rise to the highest level, to move to the grandest expression of his being, in order to present a living example to all human beings everywhere.

And then He prayed that we would not only see the evidence of His Oneness with the Father, but our own Oneness with God as well.

It was a marvellous inspiration for him to invite those who could not imagine themselves to be a part of God to imagine themselves to be a part of Him. He knew that it would be easier for us to see ourselves as “Brothers in Christ” than as One with God!
“I and my Father are one (John 10:30). That is: God is within EACH ONE of us.
“And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one.” (John 17:22)

He stated repeatedly the truth of our oneness with God.
And if Jesus Christ was One with God, then so too are we. We simply do not know it, refuse to believe it and cannot imagine it!
(Because we may think too “lowly” of ourselves).

So Jesus gently invited us to follow him…to go through him to God, the Father, our Creator (because most of us don’t believe we can do it directly). So he said: “I am the Life and the Way. Live your life as I live mine, go the way I’ve gone, ie. follow me – and you will experience God.

That is the truth I came to reveal to you. I came not to humble you, but to exalt you. Not to put you down, but to raise you up.

In essence, Jesus is saying: ‘I am the Life and the Way. Live your life as I live mine, go the way I’ve gone, ie. follow me – and you will experience God’. That is the truth I came to reveal to you. I came not to humble you, but to exalt you; not to put you down, but to raise you up.

Jesus, like other masters and messengers (like Buddha, Abraham, Krishna, Moses and Mohammed) LOVE you today as they did in their times on planet earth. Jesus INVITES you today, as those other masters did then to accept and embrace the wonder and glory of Who You Are. He repeated these truths frequently, so that we would get the message.

His message was that he was greater than none, nor is any one greater than any other, for You are all One.

(Jesus Christ chose to live with the “highest thoughts” and consequently lived at the highest level of humanity as “son of man”.) Jesus said what He said and did what He did – that you may know who He was… and thus know also Who YOU Are.
Often what is hard for us to believe about ourselves, we can believe about another – and Jesus knew this! That was His mission: precisely what He knew and why He chose do do what He did …in life and in
death. Thus, it is not Jesus’s death that can save us, but his LIFE!

We are the hope of humanity
YOU too can CHOOSE to be the HOPE OF HUMANITY

“YOU can be a CHANNEL of God’s (the Ultimate Source’s) justice, peace and love. The world needs a deep change, a ‘transformation of heart’: to one of forgiveness and generosity of spirit through masses of ‘ordinary’ people. And that is the real evidence of God’s (‘Divine Presence’s’) return to planet earth”.

“God is leading us to the light. What we learn in the darkness, we are to share in the eternal light.”

Craig is studying the teachings of different religions, as he researches and writes his latest novel ‘A New Dawn’ ( already available at http://www.amazon.com/A-New-Dawn-ebook/dp/B005GXS350/ref=sr_1_28?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1322765801&sr=1-28) ), set in the Middle East: To attempt to find ‘common ground’/principles between different religions and cultures. And as he learns from his research, is sharing these notes in an attempt to ‘enlighten’ (himself and perhaps others) about different religious faiths. As I “try to grow” spiritually, I am sharing some of the author’s writings on this most significant man, for you to ponder on (if you so choose) – the person who Christians believe to be ‘God in human form’), whose life and death 2000 years ago largely shaped human history and our beliefs about life (and what is indeed possible to achieve!). I am motivated, perhaps “inspired” to share these ‘eternal truths’ about Jesus by Neale Donald Walsch, so that all our lives may greatly benefit in many ways.

This information that I’m sharing is sourced from an excellent and insightful book titled ‘TOMORROW’S GOD’ by Neale Donald Walsch (published by Hodder and Stoughton, a division of Hodder Headline).

This article (in point form) was largely based upon notes , whilst studying the link between the human mind (psychology) and spirituality. Whilst I may not agree with all of Walsch’s views and beliefs on the concept of God, a “Higher Power’, I’m sharing this piece to hopefully stimulate thinking and discussion on these concepts from Walsh’s personal ideas and beliefs on the ‘airey-fairey spiritual journey’ (and do ‘try to test’, further explore and then apply these principles in ‘real life’).

I have taken what I feel to be the main points, directly as they appeared in Chapter Twelve of Walsch’s thought-provoking great new book (together with a few additional points of my own – in brackets). Hope this piece (including a few thoughts of my own) may be of interest to you too.

What do Jews believe? What do Jews Believe about Jesus?

To clarify the Jewish position, it is important to understand why Jews don’t believe in Jesus. (And the more “info” that’s available, the better-informed choices people can make about their spiritual path).

For 2,000 years, Jews have rejected the Christian idea of Jesus as messiah.
Why don’t Jews accept Jesus as the Messiah?

Jews do not accept Jesus as the messiah because:

1) JESUS DID NOT FULFIL THE MESSIANIC PROPHECIES
Like usher in an era of world peace, and end all hatred, oppression, suffering and disease. As it says: “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4)

Christians counter that Jesus will fulfil these in the Second Coming, but Jewish sources show that the Messiah will fulfill the prophecies outright, and no concept of a second coming exists.

2) JESUS DID NOT EMBODY THE PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS OF MESSIAH
Jesus was not a prophet. Prophecy can only exist in Israel when the land is inhabited by a majority of world Jewry. Prophecy ended upon the death of the last prophets — Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Jesus appeared on the scene approximately 350 years after prophecy had ended.

3) BIBLICAL VERSES “REFERRING” TO JESUS ARE BELIEVED TO BE MIS-TRANSLATIONS
Biblical verses can only be understood by studying the original Hebrew text — which reveals many discrepancies in the Christian translation (like the Virgin birth). Throughout the New Testament, Jesus contradicts the Torah and states that its commandments are no longer applicable

4) JEWISH BELIEF IS BASED SOLELY ON NATIONAL REVELATION
(ie. God’s message to the entire nation of Israel).
The Jews did not believe in Moses, because of the miracles he performed. Whenever anyone’s belief is based on seeing miracles, he has lingering doubts, because it is possible the miracles were performed through magic or sorcery. All of the miracles performed by Moses in the desert were because they were necessary, and not as proof of his prophecy.

Judaism is not miracles. It is the personal eyewitness experience of every man, woman and child, standing at Mount Sinai 3,300 years ago.

5) CHRISTIANITY CONTRADICTS JEWISH THEOLOGY

“There is neither east nor west, tribe nor ethnicity, male or female,
Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist. Christian nor Jew. There is only a God-filled humanity.”

“Let each one of us build bridges rather than barriers, openness rather than walls. Let us look at distant horizons together in a spirit of acceptance, helpfulness, co-operation and peace. Let our leaders look at the future with a vision – to see things not as they are, but what they could one day become.”
– craig

“When people’s hearts are full of love, the world is filled with hope.”

“Let not our different beliefs set us apart as human beings, but rather let our shared humanity be what defines and unites us as common citizens of our planet.”
“Instead of the limits of borders (of countries and of our minds) let us and our leaders expand our sense of possibility… and together let’s look at building bridges to distant horizons, far and great. Lord, help us all lift our eyes a little higher.”

WHAT DO THE JEWS BELIEVE ABOUT JESUS?

Introduction:
Craig is studying the teachings of different religions (to find ‘common ground’/principles/ and as he learns from his research, is sharing these notes in an attempt to ‘enlighten’ (himself and perhaps others) regarding ‘eternal and universal truths.’ These notes form a background to Craig’s new novel set in the Middle East, on which he’s currently working , titled ‘A New Dawn: Let the Journey Begin’. Hope this piece may be of interest to you too (as well as perhaps promoting more understanding of other religions).

Judaism is not miracles. It is the personal eyewitness experience of every man, woman and child, standing at Mount Sinai 3,300 years ago.

5) CHRISTIANITY CONTRADICTS JEWISH THEOLOGY

The following theological points apply primarily to the Roman Catholic Church, the largest Christian denomination.

A. GOD AS THREE?

The Catholic idea of Trinity breaks God into three separate beings: The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19).

In Jewish law, worship of a three-part god is considered idolatry — one of the three cardinal sins that a Jew should rather give up his life than transgress. This explains why during the Inquisitions and throughout history, Jews gave up their lives rather than convert.

B. MAN AS GOD?

Roman Catholics believe that God came down to earth in human form, as Jesus said: “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30).

Judaism says that the Messiah will be born of human parents, and possess normal physical attributes like other people. He will not be a demi-god, and will not possess supernatural qualities. In fact, an individual is alive in every generation with the capacity to step into the role of the Messiah.

C. INTERMEDIARY FOR PRAYER?

The Catholic belief is that prayer must be directed through an intermediary — i.e. confessing one’s sins to a priest. Jesus himself is an intermediary, as Jesus said: “No man cometh unto the Father but by me.”

In Judaism, prayer is a totally private matter, between each individual and God. As the Bible says: “God is near to all who call unto Him” (Psalms 145:18). Further, the Ten Commandments state: “You shall have no other gods BEFORE ME,” meaning that it is forbidden to set up a mediator between God and man. (see Maimonides – Laws of Idolatry ch. 1)

6) JEWS AND GENTILES

Judaism does not demand that everyone convert to the religion. The Torah of Moses is a truth for all humanity, whether Jewish or not. King Solomon asked God to heed the prayers of non-Jews who come to the Holy Temple (Kings I 8:41-43). The prophet Isaiah refers to the Temple as a “House for all nations.”

Jews have never actively sought converts to Judaism because the Torah prescribes a righteous path for gentiles to follow, known as the “Seven Laws of Noah.” Maimonides explains that any human being who faithfully observes these basic moral laws earns a proper place in heaven.

7) BRINGING THE MESSIAH

Judaism says that the Messiah will be born of human parents, and possess normal physical attributes like other people. He will not be a demi-god, and will not possess supernatural qualities. In fact, an individual is alive in every generation with the capacity to step into the role of the Messiah.

Maimonides states that the popularity of Christianity (and Islam) is part of God’s plan to spread the ideals of Torah throughout the world. This moves society closer to a perfected state of morality and toward a greater understanding of God. All this is in preparation for the Messianic age.

Indeed, the world is in desperate need of Messianic redemption. War and pollution threaten our planet; ego and confusion erode family life. To the extent we are aware of the problems of society, is the extent we will yearn for redemption. As the Talmud says, one of the first questions a Jew is asked on Judgment Day is: “Did you yearn for the arrival of the Messiah?”

How can we hasten the coming of the Messiah? The best way is to love all humanity generously, to keep the mitzvot of the Torah (as best we can), and to encourage others to do so as well.

Despite the gloom, the world does seem headed toward redemption. One apparent sign is that the Jewish people have returned to the Land of Israel and made it bloom again. Additionally, a major movement is afoot of young Jews returning to Torah tradition.

The Messiah can come at any moment, and it all depends on our actions. God is ready when we are. For as King David says: “Redemption will come today — if you hearken to His voice.”

The Jewish View of Jesus
According to the New Testament and the Christian church, Jesus is divine, the son of God, the Messiah. In sharp contrast, Jews believe Jesus was a man! –
Jesus – The Man

Like other educated Jews in his day, he was faithful to the law of Moses, learned in Jewish scriptures and oral law, steeped in the spirit of the Pharisees (the leading religious teachers of his day), and expectant of the coming of the Messianic Era (which he called the “Kingdom of God”). In his day, many people called Jesus “rabbi.”

Like other religious, nationalistic Jews before and after him, Jesus angered the Roman government.

The Romans considered the ideas preached by Jesus to be dangerous. As a result, the Romans arrested Jesus during his Passover trip to Jerusalem. Then the Romans, upon the order of the Roman procurator, executed Jesus.

Jesus – The Messiah

After Jesus’ death, a group of simple fishermen and artisans, called “Nazarenes” after Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth, became his followers. Jesus’ brother James, headed the Nazarenes in Jerusalem for approximately thirty years, until 62 C.E. when he was also executed by the Romans. The Nazarenes observed Jewish laws, and they believed that Jesus would return soon to inaugurate God’s kingdom on earth. Thus, Jesus was a founder of a religious movement, or more specifically of the sect of the Nazarenes within Judaism.

The Jewish View of Jesus

Jews believe Jesus himself would have been shocked to know that many people today view him as the Messiah. According to Judaism, Jesus was a Jewish man who was executed and later given divine status by the Christian church. Christianity claimed Jesus as its founder and also as God incarnate.
* *
SUMMARY:

In brief:
1. No Jew accepts Jesus as the Messiah. When someone makes that
faith commitment, they become Christian. It is not possible for someone to be both Christian and Jewish.
2. Jews reject Jesus as the Messiah because he didn’t fulfil Jewish expectations of the Messiah.
3. The Hebrew Bible (called the Old Testament by the non-Jewish world) is not proof for anything in the New Testament regarding a Messiah.
The Hebrew Bible describes the Messiah as a national saviour who would arrive at the time of the Babylonian exile (hundreds of years before
Christianity) and restore the nation of Israel with a capital at Jerusalem.

The original “messianic” aspirations of the Jewish People was to return from Exile and to restore the Jewish nation.

*
In short, Jews do not accept Jesus as the messiah because:

1) Jesus did not fulfil the messianic prophecies.

2) Jesus did not embody the personal qualifications of the Messiah.

3) Biblical verses “referring” to Jesus are mistranslations.

4) Jewish belief is based on national revelation.
and

5) Christianity contradicts Jewish theology

WHAT DO BAHAI BELIEVE?

Their main beliefs are as follows:

* Oneness of Religion: All the world’s religions represent stages in the revelation of God’s will and purpose for humanity.

Prophets are teachers – not saviours. God cannot incarnate himself and reveal himself to man. Therefore Jesus cannot be God. Jesus is seen as one of God’s manifestations sent to human beings to assist in our spiritual evolution. The raising of the body of Jesus was actually the coming to life of Christ’s teachings in the disciples, the restoration of their beliefs and convictions.

Some of the main principles of the Bahai faith:

* Oneness of God: There is only ONE God

“The peoples of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly source, and are the subjects of one God.”
– Bahau’uallah

* Oneness of religion: All the world’s religions represent stages in the revelation of God’s will and purpose for mankind.
“Let your vision be world-embracing, rather than confined to your own self.”
– Bahau’llah

* Oneness of Mankind – there is only one human race and we are all connected.

“The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable, unless and until its unity is firmly established.”
– Bahau’llah

* Abolition of all prejudices

* The equality of men and women

* The elimination of the extremes of poverty and wealth

* The independent investigation of truth

* that religion and science agree.

The goal of the Bahai is a world governed by order, justice; love and peace: a world culture as the basis for spiritual advancement of all that live on earth, providing a way of life for all that is truly worthy of mankind. Bahai believe that the nature of God is completely unknowable – he/she/it is trancendant to the point of total inaccessibility. Prophets are teachers – not saviours!

BAHAI work for world peace and believe in freedom of expression.

*
A few personal thoughts to end off..

Everybody’s truth is different, because our experiences, our environments, our cultures, our life paths are different. So every person’s faith is different (even the state of having NO faith). Finally, perhaps no religion can ever represent the Absolute Truth (because ‘Absolute Truth’ has a degree of subjectivity – at least I believe so!). Rather, religions can be different paths to the same Truth, with God, Infinite Spirit, the Grand Designer, the Essence of Life at the centre. (Like spokes leading to the hub, the Ultimate Source of Life). It’s up to YOU to CHOOSE your set of beliefs, those which fit best with YOUR truth, your being.

I am motivated to share these sets of beliefs, these “eternal truths” with others, so people may benefit and enhance their lives in a meaningful way…if they so CHOOSE. I hope that this information may be of interest to you… and that’s my reason for sharing.

HINDUISM

The Four Holy Truths: There is pain and suffering in the world – like birth, death, sickness, old age. Root cause of suffering is DESIRE. Karma is conscious action that has spiritual results. Karma consists of a persons acts and their ethical consequences + universal justice, a kind of natural moral law, rather than through a system of divine judgement. The struggle and suffering decreases as the individual acquires merit and wisdom during their life. Release from suffering. Nirvana is a complete detachment from desires and final nirvana is attained at death. Hindus renounce worldly desires. (Release = moksha)

People attain a state of perfection. Through self effort one can attain the state of peace and eternal peace called Nirvana. Buddha ignored the worship of Gods, but did not deny their existence. What was important to Buddha was not the worship of Gods or of himself, but the following of his teachings. Nirvana is not a place like heaven, but a state of being. It’s eternal – the end of suffering – no desires and individual consciousness comes to an end. It’s more of a moral philosophy, an ethical way of life.

MUSLIMS (ISLAM)

Muslims regard the Koran as the speech of God to Mohammed, mediated by Gabriel, the Angel of Revelation. They believe that God himself, not Mohammed, is the author and therefore that the Koran is infallible. Collection of passages revealed in his prophetic life – 610-632. 114 chapters. Earliest teachings – one transcendent and personal God. Last Judgement and social and personal justice. God, he asserted, had sent prophets to other nations throughout history; but having failed to reform, these nations had been destroyed. Mohamed was the last prophet. Monotheistic. Well ordered, harmonious whole – everything has its proper place and limitations. God presides over and governs the universe, which with its orderly functioning, is the primary sign and proof of God and His unity. Mohammed’s miracle is the Koran, the like of which no human can produce. Last Judgement:

The “successful ones” will go to the Garden (heaven) and the “losers” (the evil) will go to hell; although God is merciful and will forgive those who deserve forgiveness. Besides the last judgment, which will be on individuals, the Koran recognizes another kind of divine judgement, which is meted out in history to nations, peoples and communities. Nations, like individuals, may be corrupted by wealth, power and pride, and, unless they reform, these nations are punished by being destroyed or subjugated by more virtuous nations. Islamic Beliefs: ONE God. Thus it’s a monotheistic religion. Muhammad proclaimed that Allah alone is God and that other idols were not to be worshipped. Muslims believe that the faith of Christianity has been corrupted and reject the Christian concept of the Trinity. They believe in angels, who are sinless. God’s messages were brought directly to Muhammad by Gabriel. God is believed to be too exalted to speak directly with men. Belief in God’s prohets: Adam, Noah, Abraham, etc. The Koran is believed to be the exact revelation of God to humanity. Koran is believed to have taken the place of all previous revelations of God’s will – only the Koran is considered binding. A trumpet sounds – the dead will be raised and judged for their deeds – going to paradise or hell. Only those who die as martyrs slain in the battle for Islam are considered to be granted immediate access to paradise.* (see Christianity below). Prosperous and evil nations will ultimately be destroyed by God. “Islam” means surrender or submission to the will of God. Muhammad was closest to God, so his example is to be followed. Muslims believe in and honour many of the prophets of the Old Testament. But they also say that the Bible must have been corrupted; because it points out the errant behaviour of these prophets, and since no prophet of God would ever err, the Bible must be wrong. Muslims have high respect for Jesus, but the view that Jesus is divine or the son of God is, to them, the highest blasphemy. The Koran says that God is not a man, therefore he cannot have a son. He would never stoop to enter our world. Story of Christ’s death reinforces their belief that the Bible has been corrupted over the years.

Basic tenets – the 5 pillars of Islam:
· Confession of
faith
· Ritual prayer
* Obligatory alms – ‘zakat’ to help those less fortune
· The holy fast of Ramadan: a time where there is no smoking, drinking, swearing, anger, sex – use month of fasting to draw closer to God and renew their spiritual strength.
· Pilgrimage to Mecca, the “Hajj”. Every Muslim who is not sick and can afford must complete. It is a time when all are deemed equal before God, regardless of social or financial position. As part of their purification process, participation heightens their social status.

Mohamed was a prophet, yet he never performed a miracle. He was not a mystic; he had no formal schooling, consequently Mohamed had no gift with words. In addition, he did not begin his mission till he was age 40. The impetus for the rise and raid spread of Islam was three-fold: Based upon the power of words, the efficacy of prayer and man’s kinship with God.
Mohamed observed the decline of
Christianity into warring sects (it’s the same today!). The archangel Gabriel appeared to him and said that he was to be the Messenger for God. Mohamed had invited the Jews and Christians to join him, for he was not building a new religion – Mohamed was calling all who believed in ONE GOD to join in a single faith….
but that vision never materialised, as the Jews and Christians did not want to pursue that path.

Mohamed’s legacy is that of persistence. Because after he had been preaching for ten years, he had nothing to show for it: but banishment, poverty and ridicule. Yet before another ten years had passed, he headed the rise of a new religion out of the Arabian desert, a faith spreading rapidly westwards, a flame which would not be extinguished.
Persistence changes the course of history

CHRISTIANITY

Christianity and Islam are missionary religions. Both faiths believe they have a monopoly over the truth. Both want to share their version of truth with others and both compete in seeking converts. However, there is a fundamental doctrinal incompatibility between the major faiths of Islam and Christianity. Together with the Jews, they worship the God of Abraham. These three religions have many prophets in common and consequently have “shared values” that have shaped societies over the past two millenia.

Most “informed” Christians, however, do not believe the Koran is the un-intermediated word of God. Simply put, the faith of Christianity exists solely on the basis that Jesus Christ is the ‘son of God’*; whereas the faith of Islam exists purely on the basis that God dictated his laws to Mohammed and that the Koran contains God’s actual words.
* (And Christians may take this literally or “metaphorically”, symbolically, depending on their interpretation).

The concept of salvation (instant) coming purely through faith in Christ and not because of one’s life works is unique to Christianity (because there is no guarantee of salvation with Islam…unless one dies as a martyr). It’s the notion of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), which Islam and rationalists find to be the most implausible aspect of Christianity.

This debate of religions is really a battle of ideas, a ‘clash of ideologies and civilisations between east and west’. Catholic Cardinal Ratzinberger once said: “Islam simply does not have the separation of the political and religious spheres which Christianity had from the very beginning. The Koran… insists that the whole order of life be Islamic. One must understand that Islam is not simply a denomination that can be included in the free realm of a pluralistic society.” True Muslims cannot accept either the separation of powers or the freedom under the law which are the hallmarks of Western civilisation. *

SHARING SOME INFORMATION ON SOME OF THE MAJOR RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD: MUHAMMAD AND ISLAM

Submitter’s Note:
This article is sourced from an excellent and insightful book titled ‘THE STORY OF GOD’ by Robert Winston (Publisher Transworld Books, UK). A personal journey into the world of science and
religion (from the BBC television series).
Web site:
http://www.booksattransworld.co.uk/

I have taken what I feel to be the main points, directly as they appeared in Chapter Six of Dr Winston’s great book. and as I learn myself about other faiths, I am sharing what I’ve learnt about this “intriguing” subject of different religions. Like the author of ‘THE STORY OF GOD’, my motive, my aim in sharing this article is to try to contribute in some small way to a better understanding in the West of the Islamic world.
*
INTRODUCTION:

Craig is studying the teachings of different religions, as he researches and writes his latest novel ‘A New Dawn’, set in the Middle East: To attempt to find ‘common ground’/principles between different religions and cultures. And as he learns from his research, is sharing these notes in an attempt to ‘enlighten’ (himself and perhaps others) about different religious faiths. Hope this piece (including a few thoughts of my own) may be of interest to you too.

“Slowly and gradually, out of a rich experience of the world, one builds a faith.”

WHAT IS RELIGION? It’s a common system of beliefs, ‘divine law’.
Religions represent an attempt to harness innate spirituality for organisational purposes…and not always for good! Whilst spiritual contemplation is intuitive,
religion is dogmatic; however dogma in the wrong hands is always a risky thing. It’s one of the central tenets of religion that God’s Infinite Grace is available to everyone.

God, the Essence of Life, is the great mystery in the vast unknown; yet He is understandable.”

“God, the ‘Fountain of all Goodness’, is beyond the realm of our own understanding.”

* *

So after those opening thoughts…

WHAT DO MUSLIMS BELIEVE?

“Islam is a worldly religion, which cares first for the worldly affairs of humanity. The core message of the Qur’an is similar to that of Jesus:
Muhammad’s message had placed personal wealth and worldly success at the centre of their world. The people had forgotten that, Allah, God was the Creator of everything. The Qur’an does not see itself as inventing a new religion, but as reminding the Arabs of a truth to which they had become blind (the centrality of God to everything in life). Like Jesus, Muhammad (‘
Peace be upon him’) in no way sought to overthrow the traditions of the past; but said that his people had forgotten the meaning of these traditions. The signs of God’s goodness and benevolence were everywhere to be seen. Islam is voluntary surrendering to the will of Allah, of recognising his supremacy and importance.

(For Christians, Paul’s attempts to make Jesus into a God resulted in considerable confusion. How could God be present as an ominoptent Creator, and also be present everywhere, any time in the Holy Spirit? Did that mean in effect that there were three gods? If so, WHO was the greatest?).

Allah is given 99 names, all of which emphasize His superiority to the created world: ‘The Supreme, the One, Eternal and Absolute. Rich and Infinite, Giver of Life, Knower of All Things, Creator’. He is thought more as a Creator of mankind, than as a ‘Father’. However, there are sometimes contrasts, like ‘ Giver and Taker of Life’. The Muslim God knows everything. Predestined – with no random or chance event in human life.
Allah is compassionate and merciful. Humanity is the highest physical creation of Allah. Each of us has a soul and each person’s alotted time on earth is predestined. Muslims also believe that humans have free will and
exercise a choice between good and evil in their daily lives. In Islam life itself is a form of test, in which all humans are given choices.

The God Muslims worship is simply beyond human thought and language.

The Jews had expected a messiah; but had seen Jesus and others fail to deliver them from the Roman occupiers (and “opressors”) of the day. Muslims also believe in resurrection: At some point in time God will resurrect all people, irrespective of how they died.

When someone converts to Islam, God forgives all their previous sins and evil deeds!

The vast universe of God’s creation contains mystical unseen beings – angels. Each person on this earth has two guardian angels, who record that person’s actions and and are there to “prick their conscience”.

One important Muslim teaching is that humans live only once on this earth; after death, each individual faces judgement and eventually is committed to heaven or to hell. (The Qur’an describes heaven and hell in poetic, symbolic terms, rather than suggesting they are actual places where physical pleasure or physical torment will be experienced).

. *
THE FIVE PILLARS OF FAITH (a number of signs of commitment):

1. Bear witness to the faith. Once a person has sincerely taken the decision to become a Muslim, his first act is to declare his belief in Allah as the sole God and Muhammad as His Prophet, in front of two witnesses. Orthodox Muslims are expected tp pray in a congregation at least once a week, at midday on Fridays, when all work ceases.

Like the tithe given by both Jews and Christians, alm-giving or ‘zakat’ is a key pillar of Islam and should be given anonymously.

4. ‘Sawm’ or fasting. Most Muslims read through the whole of the Qur’an during Ramadan, in sessions of around two hours each night.
*

ISLAM AND MODERNITY ( ‘jihad’ and ‘sharia’)

Though the religion had very war-like beginnings, the term ‘jihad’ is often misunderstood and accordingly does not reflect the nature of the Islamic idea. ‘Jihad’ is certainly not ‘holy war’ to convert non-believers, but literally means ‘struggle’: usually that of the soul attempting to overcome the obstacles, which prevent an indidual from getting closer to God. Indeed, Islam has a proud history of being tolerant towards other monotheistic faiths, and defends individual liberties. Faith is a matter of choice of the individual.

Islam (through the Koran/Hadith) teaches that Jesus was a prophet only and never died. Salvation is attained through works alone after reciting allegiance to Allah

In the Qur’an, believers are required to be patient with non-believers, as Allah requested: “Bear with patience what they say, and when they leave, give a courteous farewell.”(sura 73:10)
“Deal gently with unbelievers; give them enough time (to change their minds)” (sura 86:17).
Jihad may be declared only in defence of Allah, and not for conversion or conquest.
“Fight in the way of God those who fight you, but do not begin hostilities; God does not like the agressor.” (sura 2:190)

‘If they seek peace, then you seek peace. And trust in God – for He is the one that hears and knows all things.’ (sura 8:61)

In Islam all people are equal before the eyes of the law. Islam makes no discrimination on the base of race, colour or language.

Muhammed was intent on changing the status of women and gave them a level of independence and a degre of equality largely unprecedented in that region of the world; so like early Christianity, Islam had a distinct appeal to women!

*
SUMMARY

There are around a billion Muslims in the world. Though the religion was born out of conflict with its early history frequently turbulent and violent, Islam was founded with peaceful values and is centred on a deep respect for human life. It has also been tolerant of other viewpoints, supporting the notion of religious pluralism in a way that few other monotheistic religions have. The Qur’an firmly asserts that: “There can be no compulsion in religion”, recognising the nature of human diversity, and perhaps the diversity of Islam itself.

Though we might not know much about or believe in the teachings of Muhammed, we can ALL nurture the real values common to ALL humanity: those highest ideals of tolerance, mercy and respect for all of life must surely triumph. “

I hope that this information from Dr Winston’s excellent book may be of interest to you… and that’s my reason for sharing.

“Those of us who long for (and are passionate about) the ideals of moderation and religious tolerance will continue to hope for a better understanding of complex issues between people of different cultures and faiths through reasoned and ‘informed’ dialogue in a spirit of mutual tolerance and respect.”

With UNDERSTANDING comes TOLERANCE
and
with TOLERANCE comes MORE UNDERSTANDING.

“There is neither east nor west, tribe nor ethnicity, male or female,
Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist. Christian nor Jew. There is only a God-filled humanity.”

So
Let each one of us in our own ‘little ways’ attempt to build bridges rather than barriers, openness rather than walls. Let us look at distant horizons together in a spirit of openess, acceptance of our differences, helpfulness, co-operation, mutual tolerance, respect, trust,
peace and especially in a spirit of love, the most powerful force in existence. Let our leaders and each ONE of us look at the future with a vision – to see things not as they are, but what they could one day become.

What divides us as fellow citizens on planet earth is not nearly as powerful as the force, the divine spirit that UNITES us: The Spirit of God, the Ultimate Source that let’s us accept and even celebrate our differences …
and let’s the Love of humanity within EACH one of us to conquer anything at all.

May the Grace of our loving Creator care for and watch over you all… always

Sharing some Spiritual Thoughts and Principles on Jesus from Neale Donald Walsh’s book ‘Tomorrow’s God’

God and I are one. Jesus taught that we and God are One, but that no one wanted to believe it; because it did not serve the human agenda. Jesus was and is a saviour to all humankind. He knew Who He Really Was. So he declared it for all to hear.

“If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall
say unto this mountain, ‘Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you.”

This was an extraordinary promise. So great and so complex was Jesus’s understanding of who He was and of who we are (“I and my Father are one”). He knew deeply that there was no limit to what we could do, if we believed in ourselves, or in Him.

So great was His love for all humankind, and so full was his compassion for their suffering, that he called upon Himself to rise to the highest level, to move to the grandest expression of his being, in order to present a living example to all human beings everywhere.

(from ‘TOMORROW’S GOD’ by Neale Donald Walsch)

“Slowly and gradually, out of a rich experience of the world, one builds a faith.”

God and I are one. Jesus taught that we and God are One, but that no one wanted to believe it; because it did not serve the human agenda. Jesus was and is a saviour to all humankind. He knew Who He Really Was. So he declared it for all to hear.

He declared something else. He said that what he did on the earth, we could also do. By elevating and expanding His consciousness, together with a high level of faith is the key to experiencing these gifts. That was the central message that Jesus taught.

(In other words, simply the Spirit of the Creator is in us) ” And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one.” (John 17:22)

He stated repeatedly the truth of our oneness with God. And if Jesus Christ was One with God, then so too are we. We simply do not know it, refuse to believe it and cannot imagine it!

His message was that he was greater than none, nor is any one greater than any other, for You are all One.

Jesus, like other masters and messengers (like Buddha, Abraham, Krishna, Moses and Mohammed) LOVE you today as they did in their times on planet earth. Jesus INVITES you today, as those other masters did then to accept and embrace the wonder and glory of Who You Are.

That was His mission: precisely what He knew and why He chose do do what He did …in life and in death! Thus, it is not Jesus’s death that can save us, but his LIFE!

We are the hope of humanity YOU too can CHOOSE to be the HOPE OF HUMANITY

Can Muslims Follow the Biblical Christ and Still Be Muslim?

. Because
most Muslims can’t bring themselves to say, “Jesus is God,”
Christians write them off as heretics. The problem with this is that
there’s nowhere in the New Testament that says, “Jesus is God”;
so what we’re doing is insisting on non-biblical language as a litmus
test for biblical faith. The doctrine may be true, and I believe it
is, but should we really think of someone as outside the fold if they
can’t bring themselves to say something that isn’t directly stated in
the New Testament? I wonder if a Muslim who respects the New
Testament could find it in his or her theology to accept the
statement, “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God
and the Word was God . . . and the Word became flesh and dwelt among
us” (John 1:1-14). If
a Muslim can accept this statement as the inspired Word of God, could
we not call them brothers and sisters, even if our understanding of
what these verses mean may be slightly different?

Lately, I’ve been
hearing a lot about the “Insider Movement” which is what
missionary experts refer to as
Muslims
who love and follow Jesus while remaining within the cultural fold of
Islam.

I can remember before moving to Senegal as a missionary, a thought
flashed through my mind, “I wonder if God might use me to
initiate a movement of Muslims coming to biblical faith in Christ as
part of a Reformation movement within Islam?” It turned out to
be a fleeting thought. Instead I opted for the traditional
apologetics approach, pointing out to Muslims why the New Testament
is superior to the Quran and why they’re wrong about denying the
divinity of Jesus and the atonement. I never seriously questioned
this approach until I read Carl Medearis’s excellent book
Muslims,
Christians, and Jesus
.
In his book, Carl
shares
stories of his interactions with Muslims who deeply love Jesus and
strive to follow his teachings — yet remain committed Muslims.

I nearly wept thinking about how things could have been different, if
I had trusted my original instincts. But now I have new questions,
and they’re a bit unnerving, because they
strike
at the heart of what it means to be a “Muslim” and what it
means to be a “Christian.

I’ve heard that there are Muslim followers of Jesus who revere and
strive to follow after the Jesus they see revealed in the synoptic
gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), but
I’m
wondering if these same Muslims can find a place in their theology to
accept the rest of the New Testament as well? And if they can, I’m
wondering if Christians can find a place in their theology to make
room for Muhammad as a pre-messianic figure, pointing people to faith
in Jesus the Messiah
(a
term the Quran affirms, by the way), maybe not as authoritative as an
Old Testament prophet, but perhaps on par with the status of local
prophets in the New Testament? Let’s break this down.
Because
most Muslims can’t bring themselves to say, “Jesus is God,”
Christians write them off as heretics. The problem with this is that
there’s nowhere in the New Testament that says, “Jesus is God”;

so what we’re doing is insisting on non-biblical language as a litmus
test for biblical faith.

*

Let’s talk about the
cross. Mark Siljander has done an excellent job in his book, A Deadly
Misunderstanding, showing that the case can be made in the Quran that
Jesus died and rose again. If this is true, might it be possible for
a Muslim to accept that the Messiah’s death has saving significance
even if — to my knowledge — the Quran doesn’t explicitly say so?
After all, the Quran does confirm the authenticity of the gospels,
and the case can be made from the gospels that the blood of Jesus was
shed for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:28). If we look at the
sermons of Peter and Paul in the book of Acts, we see neither a very
high Christology, nor do we see the doctrine of penal substitution —
a doctrine highly offensive to Muslims — and yet we’re told
explicitly that those who heard and believed their message received
eternal life (Acts 13:48). The Apostles’ message in the book of Acts
was essentially “Jesus was crucified, but God raised Him from
the dead and through this man is preached to you forgiveness of sins
and the hope of eternal life” (see Acts 10:39-43, 13:37-49,
17:31-32). Notice the apostles’ emphasis on the humanity of Jesus in
his saving work. I daresay if an evangelist preached like that today,
he or she would likely be labeled a heretic! Lest I be misunderstood,
I’m not denying the deity of Christ, and neither am I saying that the
doctrine of penal substitution is wrong, per se. I’m simply raising
the issue that if a Muslim can believe and practice the bare
essentials of what biblical faith in Jesus requires and still be true
to their own faith, then not only have we figured out a way to build
a bridge of peace between the historic religions of Islam and
Christianity, we’ve also figured out a way for Christians to be
faithful to the command of Jesus to “Go and make disciples of
all nations,” without using our faith as a battering ram to
demonize people of another faith. Discuss! ?Aaron D. Taylor is the

foremost a human being, and second a Jew, Muslim, Shi’ite, a Sunni,
Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, or a Sikh …’ will we progress and break
down barriers between peoples, nations and cultures, east and west.
Let not our beliefs , but our shared humanity (ALL of us) define who
we really are. ” – craig

Craig hopes to encourage, motivate and inspire people to be their
best through realising their full potentials and live their very best
lives. Craig believes in the great potential of every human being in
the journey of life and loves to encourage people to share their
individual (and guiding) spirits, so that they become all that they
are CAPABLE of being.
