What is RELIGION?:

In his book ‘VISION OF POWER AND GLORY’, John Kehoe examines the difference between spirituality and religion: Like him, I believe that you do not have to have any one particular belief to nurture yourself spiritually. It is not adopting a religion which is of critical importance; but rather by undergoing a spiritual awakening, which gives us comfort to get through the trials and tribulations of life. Why is that? Because all that religion is, is a set of beliefs. You adopt a set of principles or body of knowledge, eg.
Christian, Jewish, Malay, Indian, Buddhist, Muslim, etc. Anything at all…and hasn’t religion and other rigid dogmas caused so many wars over the years – from the beginning of man.

However, everyone is convinced there is the one true way (to truth and enlightenment) – that theirs is the only religion to hold. And this often causes strife in family’s and countries. But is there only one true religion which is correct? There is no one true way, I believe. There are as many ways as there are people to find God, the spirit of the Universe itself…and all that is good in life.

I believe that all religions can comfort and nourish the soul – as long as you are a true believer in the ALMIGHTY, a Power Greater than Oneself…and have FAITH in his will (or God’s plan for you or whatever you may wish to call Infinite Spirit). So religion in itself can be a very good thing.

In my research on the link between the human mind and spirituality this piece was sourced from a most interesting book by John Kehoe. Whilst the submitter may not necessarily agree with all the author’s beliefs and writings, I am sharing what I consider the main points from this work in the spirit of stimulating discussion and questioning, as well as encouraging people to read this book and hope it may be helpful in finding their own spiritual path.

SPIRITUALITY:

What is spirituality?

Spirituality goes much deeper than religion. At least I believe so. It is the innermost sense of you. Spirituality is far more than what is in your heart – it is all of you: your heart, your soul and your entire BEING (including your spirit).

What is the Spirit?: Awaken to the spirit deep within you. The universe is pouring out to us all the time. Follow the spirit that leads to your heart. It’s a matter of our EVOLUTION as human beings. It belongs to every single human being – this feeling of belonging to the human race. The feeling of spirituality is pouring out to us and beckoning us to make the most of our lives through the power of the Alimghty. “Reborn Christians” often say they have this feeling. I truly believe there is more to life than myself. It is your own thoughts and beliefs which are all-important; but they are guided by ourselves and by the “Person/Higher Power” way up above us. I believe God, as the Ultimate Source gives us hints through thoughts entering our subconscious mind about what path to take, following our dreams (perhaps dreams far bigger than we could conceive on our own). Or people we meet along our path who can help us…and we in turn help them. I truly believe God, our Creator or whatever you may wish to call Infinite Spirit gives us the power of choice and to find a purpose for our lives.

And one day we will be able to see the fruits of our labours and our BELIEFS for ourselves. This is what keeps me going on my long and ardous quest as a writer.
Just like Odysseus from Greek mythology.

Reap, sow, then wait for the bumper harvest. It is sure to come. You too can plant that first seed to inner peace and serenity, joy, fullness, compassion for others, and especially love. Then see the fruits of the germination of your spirit, just like the rose bud blooms in spring.

With true spirituality your life will be filled with tranquillity and happiness. Spirituality is taught to us as a duty and obligation (we have to go to church and pray, otherwise ‘the devil’ will wreak havoc upon our lives); but it is a path that brings us great joy and enlightenment (or as John Kehoe calls it “enlightened self interest”), if we simply relax and TRUST the process and enjoy the journey. I believe this new feeling of serenity and calm acceptance can make us all become better sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, wives/husbands, parents – but more importantly, better human beings (even a more astute businessman, who makes a lot of money- if that is what you really want). Because with true spirituality every aspect of your being becomes enhanced. This feeling of spirituality is experienced deep within yourself. In your heart, but more in your soul, you feel a closeness to nature and to your CREATOR. It’s as if you are having a personal chat with Him. Then you will see the flowering of the bud …in time… in the spring-time.

A few short definitions to summarise and end off this section…

Religion is “living in order to die” – that is, preparing on earth for the next life. Spirituality is “living in order to live life to the fullest”. It’s a feeling of being at peace with oneself, a calm acceptance of oneself and our circumstances.

I believe those two definitions encompass the true differences between religion and spirituality.

This is my favourite and sums up my message of my “little” life…in trying in some small way to break down barriers between people.

The Story of the Four Candles

The Four Candles burned slowly.

Their ambiance was so soft you could hear them speak…

The first candle said, “I Am Peace, but these days, nobody wants to keep me lit.”

Then Peace’s flame slowly diminished and went out completely.

The second candle said, “I Am Faith, but these days, I am no longer indispensable.”

Then Faith’s flame slowly diminished and went out completely.

Sadly the third candle spoke, “I Am Love and I haven’t the strength to stay lit any longer.”

Sharing a Few Thoughts on Spirituality and Beliefs

Spirituality is not religion. It is something different (and more profound, deeper, I believe): A “connection with the Divine” (or what mystics often call “union with God”. Life is a spiritual, not a religious journey. (I think it was Wayne Dyer, who said: “We are all spiritual beings on an earthly journey”.
Or something like that!

Thus, as with your day-to-day existence, it is important to seek and find what suits you best to enhance your spiritual life. I believe the spiritual dimension is something we can all “tap into”… like ‘a sixth sense’, which gives each person ‘superior wisdom’ (“Infinite Wisdom from the Ultimate Source”) in making decisions and choosing one’s path in life. Solitude and stillness is conducive for this state of “being”, in which our senses are “heightened”. I find incredible clarity of thought in this quiet period.

What is known as Spirit is an indefinable aspect of human experience that is way beyond the reach of science. “Spiritual” people draw on another source of power that is shared by humanity. This realm of God and the spiritual world is way beyond our understanding; so I have no compulsion to find “definite answers” …to try to make sense of the “incomprehensible”. However, there is another dimension of life to every one of us – the spiritual dimension, or “God-consciousness” . Because we ALL have the power to CHOOSE our beliefs and operate on another, “higher intuitive” dimension (if we want to). My best and most appropriate definition of God is the Essence of Life and/or the Ultimate Source.

Which leads to some central beliefs of Christianity.. and. the universal message of Christ: His compassion and humanity. I believe a person can subscribe to Christ’s teachings without necessarily believing (literally) that He is the ‘Son of God’. (Did ‘humble” Jesus actually use those words, or were they the words of his disciples, btw?). The God I see in Jesus of Nazareth is revealed in the personhood of everybody; so the highest aspiration is trying to enhance the personhood of every person who touches your life.

Jesus was the conduit, whereby the love of God was loosed to human history. His divinity transformed people with a new awareness, a new consciousness, a new way of LIVING and THINKING. I believe that Jesus genuinely believed himself to be a ‘Son of God’, divinely ordained with a specific mission, which he CHOSE to fulfil. So, though I don’t label myself as a “goody-goody Christian” (don’t believe in “labelling” or excluding people), I CHOOSE to believe in Jesus Christ and follow his teachings to connect to God, the ‘Ground of all Being, the Essence of Existence’. That is the path that I’ve chosen for myself!

The divine meets the human perfectly in the life of Christ (as Jesus embodies all the qualities of God). Jesus was the Perfect Teacher. He truly believed that common people can become incredibly powerful beings. He knew without a shadow of doubt that ordinary people could become extraordinary people, if they could become possibility thinkers. You are what YOU believe yourself to be and God will never tell us to do something that is impossible to do.

The teachings of Christ were psychologically correct and violate no psychological laws. These teachings were original in concept and spirit. The “Maker of the human mind” possessed a wealth of
wisdom in dealing with people’s day-to-day, as well as their spiritual problems. He knew the deepest recesses of the human heart: “He knew what was in man.”

I am the good shepherd.”

The “Hallmarks of a True Champion”:

When things get close, it is not a matter of luck, it’s a matter of having the mental edge.

You have to get into that area that elite sportsmen call ‘the zone’.

True champions, like an Ayrton Senna, a Roger Federer are able to find a new level (of performance) – when required, they have the ability to “dig deep” and find something very special inside themselves (the ability to “find and select another, a higher gear”, when needed in pressure-cooker situations, then come out triumphant)

* Resilience – it’s the ability to bounce back after setbacks.
“A champ is down at times, but he’s never out.”

* Patience and dedication.

* Consistency of performance

* Courage – “heaps of it”

However, “courage can only take a person so far; whereas genius can take one a lot further”.

* An outstanding work ethic.
They work really hard at what they do, continually developing their skills. Elite sportspeople keep improving every year. Former multiple womens tennis champion, Martina Navritilova was only average on her early career, but improved hugely with dedication, effort and persistence.
Champions spend hours and hours of practice and rehearsal . (It has been said that it takes about 10000 hours of practice and rehearsal to be the best in the world??? I think it might have been Malcolm Gladwell who said that, but am not sure whether the statement is valid. What do you think?)

* Great memory – for minute details. They remember well the precise factors, circumstances and conditions that led to their successes in the past. “A memory on how to move”, eg. Andre Agassi’s great return of serve.
“Super-stars” have a great sense of anticipation, which is learnt. And success (like failure) is a learnt habit.
Great attention to detail as evident in their professional planning the path to success.

* Also the ability to concentrate on many aspects at once…ie, managing their minds!

Sharing a Few Thoughts on Spirituality and Beliefs

The teachings of Christ were psychologically correct and violate no psychological laws. These teachings were original in concept and spirit. The “Maker of the human mind” possessed a wealth of wisdom in dealing with people’s day-to-day, as well as their spiritual problems. He knew the deepest recesses of the human heart: “He knew what was in man.”

And his other claims/statements…

“I am the good shepherd.”
(John 10:11)

“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.
(John 10:9)

“I am the bread of life.”
(John 6:35)

“I am the vine, you are the branches.
He who abides in me and I in him,
bears much fruit.”

Note (and my comment): The God of Islam is never described or known as “Father”, but in both Christianity and Judaism, God is known as “Father”.

In these writings I’m sharing some personal thoughts and beliefs, as well as those of some prominent writers and theologians. Gets one thinking, as it’s a good time to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. Hope it’s not too “religious” for you. Spirituality is not religion. It is something different (and more profound, deeper, I believe): A “connection with the Divine” (or what mystics often call “union with God”. Life is a spiritual, not a religious journey. (I think it was Wayne Dyer, who said: “We are all spiritual beings on an earthly journey”.
Or something like that!

Thus, as with your day-to-day existence, it is important to seek and find what suits you best to enhance your spiritual life. I believe the spiritual dimension is something we can all “tap into”… like ‘a sixth sense’, which gives each person ‘superior wisdom‘ (“Infinite Wisdom from the Ultimate Source”) in making decisions and choosing one’s path in life. Solitude and stillness is conducive for this state of “being”, in which our senses are “heightened”. I find incredible clarity of thought in this quiet period.

What is known as Spirit is an indefinable aspect of human experience that is way beyond the reach of science. “Spiritual” people draw on another source of power that is shared by humanity. This realm of God and the spiritual world is way beyond our understanding; so I have no compulsion to find “definite answers” …to try to make sense of the “incomprehensible”. However, there is another dimension of life to every one of us – the spiritual dimension, or “God-consciousness” . Because we ALL have the power to CHOOSE our beliefs and operate on another, “higher intuitive” dimension (if we want to). My best and most appropriate definition of God is the Essence of Life and/or the Ultimate Source.

Which leads to some central beliefs of Christianity.. and. the universal message of Christ: His compassion and humanity. I believe a person can subscribe to Christ’s teachings without necessarily believing (literally) that He is the ‘Son of God’. (Did ‘humble” Jesus actually use those words, or were they the words of his disciples, btw?). The God I see in Jesus of Nazareth is revealed in the personhood of everybody; so the highest aspiration is trying to enhance the personhood of every person who touches your life.

Jesus was the conduit, whereby the love of God was loosed to human history. His divinity transformed people with a new awareness, a new consciousness, a new way of LIVING and THINKING. I believe that Jesus genuinely believed himself to be a ‘Son of God’, divinely ordained with a specific mission, which he CHOSE to fulfil. So, though I don’t label myself as a “goody-goody Christian” (don’t believe in “labelling” or excluding people), I CHOOSE to believe in Jesus Christ and follow his teachings to connect to God, the ‘Ground of all Being, the Essence of Existence’. That is the path that I’ve chosen for myself!

The divine meets the human perfectly in the life of Christ (as Jesus embodies all the qualities of God). Jesus was the Perfect Teacher. He truly believed that common people can become incredibly powerful beings. He knew without a shadow of doubt that ordinary people could become extraordinary people, if they could become possibility thinkers. You are what YOU believe yourself to be and God will never tell us to do something that is impossible to do.

RUN YOUR OWN RACE: THE GREATEST RACE (OF LIFE)

These are some brief notes that I took from an address by American televangelist, Joel Osteen some years back. I hope you find them as uplifting and inspirational as I do… and that is my reason for sharing. Enjoy…

Plant seeds of hope in others. David (say = I) fulfilled his purpose for his generation. God has equipped each one of us exactly what we need to achieve our destinies. When God made you, He (?? or choose whatever means to you, male, female or “gender neutral – It”) threw away the mould. Be comfortable with who God made you to be. Then make the most of what God has made.

Don’t compare yourself with others; otherwise you’ll lose focus.

Just because you’ve failed before, doesn’t mean that you are a failure.

Discipline (and not desire) determines your destiny.

God has not equipped you to do something outside your vision. God, the Ultimate Source has equipped you to fulfil your unique destiny.

Follow your own inner vision for your life – be comfortable in yourself. (“I can’t run your race, run with your vision”). Only YOU can do that. Stay focussed. Say :Even in the valleys, this situation will work out for my ultimate good.

EXPECT a favourable outcome to your endeavours, ie EXPECT SUCCESS

“Greatness is forged in the valley of adversity.”

Just be the very best you can be. St Paul: “I have kept the faith. I have followed the course.”

Celebrate yourself: who God made you to be. God has already equipped you with all you need to achieve your dreams. You DO have the tools for your calling, to be victorious.

You will soar high and be all the person God intended you to be.

champions are. But what separates him is that he came to realise there was more
to life – and that is why people are making films about him today. He had the
visionary mystique to know in a world of plenty you do not have to have
