Bobby Schuller (BS) interviews Mark and Roma.
BS: If you’ve ever seen “The Voice,” “Shark Tank,” or “Touched by an Angel,” you are in luck today because we have the real privilege of interviewing Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who of course have been involved with both of these programs, and are now at the precipice of launching a new tour with their latest movie, “Son of God.”
Thank you for meeting with me today here at Saddleback Church. Mark and Roma, you both have had these incredible careers. How did you go from doing all of these television programs to doing the film “Son of God?” How did that happen?
MB: It all began with The Bible TV series, which aired in 2013. Of course many, many people in Hollywood told us we we’re completely crazy and that no one was going to watch The Bible on prime time television. Clearly, whoever said that was wrong. A hundred million Americans showed up for The Bible series, and in Canada, The Bible series beat hockey! So there you go.
BS: That’s amazing.
MB: That says everything, you need to know.
RD: It’s a miracle!
BS: Yes, that’s a true miracle.
RD: It was so amazing. You know “Son of God” began as a whisper in our hearts that became a prayer. We worked on this project together and it’s been such an epic journey; almost five years in the making.
While we were in Morocco making The Bible series and were watching the footage, and as the Jesus narrative began to unfold on the screen, I said to Mark, ‘I wish we had been making a movie. This is so beautiful.’
So we were able to cut together, adding additional footage that hadn’t appeared on the screen, and we created this beautiful stand-alone feature film which opened at the end of February and has touched millions of people’s lives. We’ve been so encouraged by the feedback of the number of people who have either fallen in love with Jesus all over again or have had an opportunity to discover him for the first time.
MB: There have been many, many stories we have heard, but a certain one comes to mind. It was maybe six weeks ago at a pre-screening of the movie we met a woman from Asia from eastern religion who watched “Son of God.” And she came to us afterwards and said, ‘you know Mark and Roma, I always thought Jesus was a western myth but having seen “Son of God,” I want to find out more about this Jesus.’ And we looked at each other and thought this is exactly why we made this movie.
BS: Wonderful.
MB: And there are thousands of other testimonials.
RD: It has been amazing. We had one mother who reached out to us and said that she couldn’t get her 17-year-old son to go to church. She said the past few months always turned into a big fight every Sunday morning.
So she said to him, ‘well maybe you’d come to the movies with me?’ He went to the movies with her on a Saturday evening, and she said somewhere around the middle of the movie he just started to cry, like his heart just blasted open and grace moved in. She said he cried the whole way through the end of the movie, he cried the whole way home, and the next morning, Sunday morning, he was waiting for her in the car.
BS: Wow, what a wonderful story. And of course there are so many people who want to communicate Jesus in a fresh way and this movie is a way to do that.

But what about non religious people? Are you hearing from people that say ‘I didn’t really grow up in church; I don’t really have the best thoughts about Jesus.’ Are you hearing from these types of people who saw “Son of God” and how are they responding?
MB: Well I think after being in Hollywood for so many years with, as you listed, a lot of hit shows; we’ve made thousands of hours of family prime time TV, and our shows are currently airing in 70 countries, so we understand audiences. And we knew that as Christians, making a sermon as a movie would not work; secular audiences will reject it. And clearly our main goal was to reach people who didn’t know Jesus. Therefore, we had to make a dramatic film and we made a political thriller with the gospel wrapped in it. If you never heard of Jesus or the bible, you’d go and see this movie, and you’d enjoy the movie, but ideally you’d want to find out more.
BS: So what’s it like being Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, and working together as a married couple in Hollywood?
MB: They call me Mr. Downey!
BS: And of course you are on tour now. You’re going from church to church, showcasing not just the movie, but you’ve incorporated a musical element to all of this.
MB: Yes, we have a great tour with Sidewalk Prophets, Chris August, Francesca Battistelli, Meredith Andrews, Natalie Grant and Jason Gray.
RD: It launches tonight. I mean here we are at Saddleback, which is like home from home for us. We love it here. We love Pastor Rick and Kay. They’re our dearest, dearest friends. And you know the idea for this tour really was nurtured here, so I think it’s very fitting that it would be at Saddleback that we would experience the world premier of this tour.
This tour brings together visual elements from The Bible series and from the “Son of God” movie, with live performances by these terrific actors to create this really immersive experience, a really emotional experience as you follow the life of Christ through music and live performance. It’s sold out across the country but for anybody that missed it, there’s a fantastic opportunity to stream it on June 3rd. You can go to sonofgodtour.com and get all the information of how to download that.
BS: So you’re asking churches, communities and small groups to get together and be a part of this simulcast. What’s going to happen on June 3rd? What are they going to see?
MB: On June 3rd they’re going to see an epic music and visual experience. You know, obviously we loved making The Bible series. I mean globally people are watching The Bible. It even went number one in Hong Kong. Then we made “Son of God” the movie which also went global. But we also wanted something that was an actual tangible experience for Christians. To take this multi-million dollar footage from the film and the series, and add it to incredible Christian music and make an experience for people to actually be there in community and enjoy it.
You know earlier you asked me off set, yes, we are the noisiest Christians in Hollywood. We know that. And I’m sure people are saying to me oh now he’s growing a beard, he’s in this whole disciple phase. But listen, we are proud to be Christians. We are very grateful for our faith. We are very happy to be noisy about it. And, we’re glad that we’ve made a show, a movie and a tour that are touching people nationwide. What we really hope is that what we are doing is encouraging a whole new generation of TV producers, film makers, tour producers and musicians to go out there and enrich people.
RD: This concert was inspired by an album, which was inspired by the movie, which was inspired by the series, which was inspired by the Holy Spirit. So you know we’re all connected and music is just such a great way to experience spirit. We all love worship. This is some of the coolest, greatest Christian music, and to see it in harmony with this footage, to be able to experience it in community, to be able to sing along and stand up and cheer, that’s something really special.
BS: That is special. As I listen to you, I am thinking “Son of God” is really a movement, isn’t it. I mean as I’m hearing you talk about this tour and the music and all of these things you are doing, I’m thinking how can I get behind this and help it, and I imagine that many of our viewers are thinking the same thing. If they want to support, like get behind what you’re doing, how can they follow you and tell their friends about you?
MB: We’re grateful for you to say that and where you said “Son of God” is a movement, I was thinking, yes, its 2000 years old!
BS: Yes! That’s right!
MB: It’s kind of working.
BS: Yes, it’s been working!
MB: As this spreads, our faith spreads more so through Asia, and across the Middle East and back to Jerusalem.
RD: I think that there’s such a potential for the visual arts to touch people in a way; it brings aliveness to the stories of our bible and it can bring a visual aliveness to our faith. And then countries maybe where they haven’t had an opportunity to go to church, or they haven’t had an opportunity to read a bible but somewhere, someone will be able to download a movie, or this concert, or the series, and it will awaken something in them. It will bring them to the Lord, and that’s really something that we are so encouraged by.
When we were out doing press for “Son of God” the movie, we had one interviewer ask us if we had a hidden agenda to evangelize. And I said to him, “No, it’s not hidden at all.”
BS: That’s great! Roma Downey, Mark Burnett, thank you so much for your time today. Wishing you the best of luck and many blessings as you begin this awesome tour with great music. We appreciate you both as a brother and sister of Christ, making a big difference for the world with positive Christianity. That’s a great thing and we love it. Thank you so much.
RD: Thank you.

BS: For more information on the streaming of “Son of God Tour,” go to http://www.sonofgodtour.com. I also encourage you to go see “Son of God” the movie. Take your family, take your friends. If you have someone that says ‘this Jesus thing is just not for me,’ take him out to dinner and go see “Son of God.” It’ll be a great thing.

How To Find And Live Your Dreams (by Dr Bruce Wilkinson)

How to Find and Live your Dreams

“I’d rather attempt something great and fail…
than try nothing and succeed.”

(US preacher and author)

Author’s Note:
This article was largely based upon a most inspiring adress by Dr Bruce Wilkinson as aired on the TV program, The Hour of Power in New Zealand on TV3 many years ago. Though it is quite “religious” (and no matter what the concept of God, or a Higher Power/ Supreme Being means to you), I have personalised some of the information and applied the principles to my own life (with a dash of humour), as in this piece.

The Rev Robert Schuller has been a great inspiration and “mentor” to me in following my personal dream for many years and I’m sharing this piece with the hope and in the spirit of inspiring other people to follow their personal dreams. That is my ‘mission’ and dream!

What would you do with your life, if you KNEW that you COULD NOT FAIL?

What dream did you carry in your heart when you were a child?

Perhaps it was to be a fireman, a nurse, a policeman, an actor, a footballer, racing driver, a musician or perhaps even a writer (“oh no”!)… but definitely NOT an “insurance man”!

What is your soul telling you to aim for in your life TODAY?

I believe that many dreams (big or small) start in prayer – in close communion with the Source of Life, the One who knows us best, our Creator, God, the Infinite Spirit of the Universe.
HOW does this happen?

With FAITH and “possibility thinking”. And “heaps” of prayer. Prayer changes our thoughts into another, a higher (loftier) DIMENSION – the SPIRITUAL. It’s a change of CONSCIOUSNESS Another analogy may be like this: Just as we live, work and play in the “real world”, we can also operate a business or touch lives in another realm, the “world of cyberspace”, as I’m hopefully doing in sharing this article). In moments of meditation and prayer (spiritual awareness) our Higher Self connects with the divine, a Force/Being/Spirit far Greater than ourselves – our spirit connects with Infinite (Divine) Spirit; so that we draw on an Higher Power with unlimited potential… the power of God, the Essence of Life, or as Napoleon Hill termed ‘Infinite Intelligence’.

And God, Infinite Spirit, a Deity, the Ground of all Being, I believe, communicates through the conduit (medium or channel) of our subconscious minds. My “very analytical scientific” friend, Andy (a micro-biologist) calls it the ” ‘God-gate’ to Infinite Intelligence, the Great Designer”. We then just have to use our tools of BELIEF (faith) and ask the right questions. EXPECT an answer to our questions, a solution to our life problems (even many big ones, like mine!). TRUST the process, then leave to ‘Invisible Intelligence, Infinite Spirit to work things out for you – the best way possible to move forward. Just relax and allow the Universe’s Infinite Wisdom to send you the right answers: the Almighty , the Grand Designer of Life WILL.

*
Here are some good points made by Dr Wilkinson…

* I truly believe that God, the Great Dream Giver, the Ultimate Source, the Ground of our very Being also has a dream for every life and especially YOUR life.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…
Before you were born, I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

and the big dreamers are the ones who’ll change the world…
so making it a better place for ALL.

* The secret of the dream: you never know how you’re going to do it before you COMMIT to doing it.

* When God gives you a dream in your heart, it is always too big for you to do…ALONE. So you need a “Partner”. A “Co-creator”. It seems overwhelming at first – impossible, way out of your reach; yet somehow it gets achieved. No, not achieved…but surpassed.

“The dreams of great dreamers are never achieved; but with God’s help are always transcended – into true miracles…beyond one’s wildest dreams.”

* Your dream is at the centre of who you really are: It’s the ‘essence’ of who you are as a person – the core of your very BEING. The dream of God is the reason for the way you are – it drives you and gives a sense of meaning and purpose to your life: to follow your unique destiny.

* The dream is always outside your comfort zone. (I thought mine was impossible (and “crazy”), from where I was (“never in a million years”). However, even our “big-little” dreams fit perfectly into God’s bigger plan, His Grand Dream for the Universe. So make your dreams big enough for God to fit in.

“Lord, Reveal Your power and somehow fit my “little” dream, my ‘little’ life into Your grand plan for this world.”

* When you start out tentatively, don’t focus on the fear – focus on the dream. Then the dream becomes more important than the fear.

* Dreams happen when you accept the fact that the dream is your calling, something YOU simply HAVE to do to fulfil you. COMMIT fully to it. Say: “I don’t know HOW I’ll do it, but God will give me the way, if I just proceed and follow the dream. Just DEPEND on God, the Essence of Life to accomplish the “seemingly impossible”! Take that first step in FAITH; then watch what happens.

I have absolutely “zilch” idea where my journey is leading, but in “partnership with the Ultimate Source” guiding me each step of the way, it’s tremendously exciting, sliding down “the rapids”, er sorry, “waterfalls of life”.

It’s the will of God, our Creator, that we follow our personal dreams – fulfilling God’s dream is what we have been made to do, based on our skills, talents, gifts and aspirations. In short, our unique personas, who we are as ‘human beans’. It’s our unique calling in life: to do what we are DESTINED to do and it usually involves helping (serving) others, ie. meeting a human need to help others or make their lives easier or better in some way. I believe the key is making some contribution, however small we may think it is, to the betterment of humanity.

“All of us can become great, because we can all SERVE.”
– Martin Luther King (or was it Mother Teresa…or both??)

CHOOSE to follow your dream; because, if you don’t, do you realise how many people will be affected? Because a dream often lies in helping someone else’s dream, or helping them towards achieving it. It is God’s dream and consequently can never be selfish.

All dreams start in FAITH, but ones faith gets strengthened as you take one step after the next (one gets “led”). Faith really works and it get’s stronger by the day, when you look back and see how far you’ve come along the path.

Never give up on your unique calling, YOUR dream, Say, “I will UNTIL.” Finally , when you feel stuck in moving ahead with your dream…once you’ve done all you can, SURRENDER your dream to God, the “Ground of All Being, Truth, Goodness and Joy”.

“Let go, let God, let good.”

My dream in sharing this piece is hopefully helping others to fulfil their potentials, their individual dreams through encouragement (and perhaps upliftment). You can’t imagine the more you pursue the dream, the more God, the Grand Designer of Life, is going to use you in ways you never imagined possible. I am continually amazed at what we’re doing each day…from what started out as the seed of a vision twelve long years ago (when I had no idea how to turn on a computer!). Though many times facing innumerable obstacles and often feeling stuck, I simply surrendered my dream to God, the Universe. Then I’d get some insight or somehow the Universe, Essence of Life, Infinite Spirit would just move me ahead and open up a path for the vision. “Co-incidences?” This journey is a true ‘miracle’ in action, I believe, that so many people around the globe are involved and helping me greatly, as one person can’t do it alone. (Thanks so much, all of you for your many skills and gifts that I don’t have – you know who you are and also that I’m a total “non-techno wally”!). Once you embark on God’s dream for your life, watch the way the Universe brings people into your life to help you and to expand the vision (because you can’t do it alone). Also my faith is considerably strengthened each day, as I see the process DOES work…and one can see how far you’ve come from those tentative first steps. I’m greatly enjoying this most enjoyable and exciting journey, as I follow my personal dream(s).

After that little personal interlude… to continue with Dr Wilkinson’s message in a few final words…

*

You’re never too old and you’re never too young to dream big dreams!

Will you go through life one day regretting that you DARED TO DREAM?
Will you too surrender to your personal (“impossible”) dream?
Absolutely NOTHING is impossible* (I can certainly vouch for that!).

“It’s kinda fun to do the impossible.”
-anon

“It always seems impossible…

until it get’s done.”

– Nelson Mandela

All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

– Walt Disney

“Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable and
receives the impossible.”
– Corrie Ten Boom

Always remember,
God’s dreams are far bigger than you could have imagined yourself.

Just TRUST God, the Essence of Life, the Ground of Our Being, Ultimate Source and enjoy the journey towards your dreams. Absolutely NOTHING is impossible. Just BELIEVE in your dream.
You CAN do ANYTHING with God’s help (just live in an attitude of dependence) and your individual journeys can be used to honour the infinite love of our Creator.

So how about doing something about following your passion and pursuing your dream TODAY?

We then just have to use our tools of BELIEF (
faith) and ask the right questions.

“Let go, let God, let good.”

Also my faithis considerably strengthened each day, as I see the process DOES work…and one can see how far you’ve come from those tentative first steps. I’m greatly enjoying this most enjoyable and exciting journey, as I follow my personal dream(s).

You’re never too old and you’re never too young to dream big dreams!

Will you go through life one day regretting that you DARED TO DREAM?
Will you too surrender to your personal (“impossible”) dream?
Absolutely NOTHING is impossible* (I can certainly vouch for that!).

Author’s Note:
This article was largely based upon a most inspiring address by Dr Bruce Wilkinson as aired on the TV program, The Hour of Power in New Zealand on TV3 many years ago.

Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable and
receives the impossible.”

So how about doing something about following your passion and pursuing your dream TODAY?

but take time to smell the flowers on your very individual journey.’ Be yourself and daily count your blessings;

then try to make a difference in the world – however small.

Try to shine your own little ray of sunshine to make the lives of others easier in some small way.
You can derive the greatest pleasure from treading the wildest uncertain path down the ‘river of life…

and just being you.”

PPS: Thank you sincerely, Drs Wilkinson and Schuller for sharing your insights and wisdom in encouraging me down my ‘untrodden path’, as I follow my dreams; but most of all, for serving as a vessel to illuminate God’s unlimited love for all of us, His children.

LOVE is the greatest and most powerful force in the world;
so shine your own unique bright light on an often darkened world …in a spirit of living at the highest level of humanity.

The Power of the Dream

About 15 years ago, I was invited here to the Crystal Cathedral for their annual men’s conference. And I came and spoke, and during that time, I had an opportunity to share and spend a few minutes with Dr. Schuller. He shared a quote that was so profound, that it inspired me so, that I put it in my book, “It Only Takes a Minute to Change Your Life.” It reads: “Dreams, where do they come from? Dr. Robert Schuller, noted minister and author, says that dreams do not come out of the blue, but rather come out of the mind of God. God matches the dream with the dreamer, someone who will receive it, respect it, embrace it, claim it, live for it, and be willing to die for it. God gives to humans one of His greatest gifts: a dream. Yet, it is up to us to receive it and let it grow or to reject it and kill it.”

Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” I believe, though, where there is a vision, the people will flourish. We must dare to dream the impossible dream. Amen? Amen. God is able to give us the ability to dream impossible dreams. In the Bible, in Joel 2:28, it says, “And it shall come to pass that I will pour out My spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. Your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.” Dreams are the seeds for success. If you took a little teeny weenie corn seed, dug a hole, put the corn seed in, covered it with dirt, watered it, it would grow into a corn stalk. If you took an acorn and dug a hole, put the acorn in, covered it with dirt and watered it, it would grow into an oak tree. The same is true for your dreams. Dreams have the ability to bloom and blossom, and grow into great plants. This church is the result of a dream. And if you can dream it, you can do it, but we must be willing to dream.

The Power of the Dream

Written By Willie Jolley

2230 2012-10-28

Willie Jolley one of the favorite speakers on the Hour of Power. A world-renowned speaker, author, motivator, and preacher, Willie started as a jazz singer. God has used him to touch so many lives with the spoken word.

Well I have only just a minute, only sixty seconds, forced upon me, can’t refuse it, didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it, but it’s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, give a count if I abuse it, just a tiny little minute, but an eternity is in it. Good morning Crystal Cathedral! Amen! I know it’s a good morning. How do I know? ‘Cause I woke up this morning without a chalk outline around my body. I said, “It’s a good day. Praise the Lord!”

Well first, I want to say greetings to everybody here at the Crystal Cathedral, and all the people around the world who are watching this broadcast. It’s a good day. This is the day the Lord has made, and we truly rejoice and are glad in it. I want to thank the Crystal Cathedral staff and team and Bobby and all of the folks here at Crystal Cathedral who invited me back. I enjoyed the last time, and I’m so grateful for your invitation. I want to say a special thank you to my friend Danny Cox, who made all of this possible in the first place. He’s my dear friend who invited me to be here the last time. And then I want to thank all the people who are watching all around the world who just overwhelmed us with your love from e-mails and Facebook messages and Tweets and letters, who said that that message inspired and empowered them. And one lady, she said, “I was just flipping the channels. I was not a believer but I heard your message and I found that I could believe. Praise God!”

Now, last time I was here, I spoke on the message, “A Set Back is a Set Up for a Come Back.” Many people said it impacted them and inspired them. If you did not hear that message, I want to invite you to go to my website. We’ve put it on a special website called jolleygoodnews.org. You can go to jolleygoodnews.org, you can see the whole message, and that’s a website in a whole mission we’ve developed to start to empower people around the world. We’ve put a program in place called Books Beyond Bars to get my book, A Set Back is a Set Up for a Come Back, into prisons because we want to encourage people in prison that their past does not determine their future.

We also have on that website, a second project, which is to get my “Dare to Dream, Dare to Win” youth video into every school in America because we want to help young people to stay away from drugs, stay away from alcohol, stay away from violence, stop the bullying, and to pursue academic excellence as part of their lives. So, we’re going to be raising funds to put all of that in place. And, finally, just to be able to inspire people to live God’s best lives. So go to jolleygoodnews.org and you’ll be able to get that information there.

Well, today I want to talk to you for a few minutes about the power of the dream. The power of the dream.

About 15 years ago, I was invited here to the Crystal Cathedral for their annual men’s conference. And I came and spoke, and during that time, I had an opportunity to share and spend a few minutes with Dr. Schuller.

I told you this when I spoke last time, that Michael Jordan was asked what was the secret to his success. He was cut from the basketball team in high school for not being good enough. But he went home and dreamed about doing impossible things with a basketball because he wanted to prove to the coach that the coach had made a mistake. Once he saw it in his mind, he tried it out on the court, and he did it.

Duke Ellington was asked how he created such incredible music. He said, “I dreamed a lot.”

Walt Disney, who built an amusement park not far from here, also some setbacks and negative situations. He went bankrupt, he went through a nervous breakdown, but when asked what was the secret to him creating Disneyland, he said, “I believe in the power of dreams.”

Mohammed Ali was asked how he revolutionized the boxing industry so people would flock to see him fight. He said, “I had a dream. I created a personality that people either loved or they hated. Those who loved me came to see me win. Those who hated me came to see me lose. In the meantime, every seat was taken.” You’ve got to have the dream. You’ve got to be willing to dream.

T.E. Lawrence, who we know today as Lawrence of Arabia, once said, “All men dream, but not equally. Those that dream at night in the dusty recesses of their mind, awaken to find that it was just vanity, a whiff of smoke. But those that dream by day are the dangerous ones for they dream with their eyes open, and they make their dreams come true.”

We must be willing to dream big dreams and not let our dreams go to the grave with us. Howard Thurman, the great theologian said, “Imagine you come to your last day on earth. You are on your deathbed, and all around you are these ghoulish looking figures with hideous sounding voices and bulging eyes, saying, ‘We are the dreams God gave to you to bring to life, and now we must die with you because you did not take action on bringing us to life.'” Oh, what a pitiful thing that would be. So, I’m encouraging people wherever you are to dream big dreams and then to act on those dreams.

But what stops us from taking action on our dreams? I like to call them the dream busters. Dream busters are all around us. In fact, dream busters are with us all the time because dream busters are those things that stop us from living our dreams. The number one dream buster we will see is fear. Fear. Now, psychologists have proven there are only two fears you were born with – the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Every other fear is a learned behavior. We must overcome our fears or our fears will overcome us.

Shakespeare said, “Our doubts are traitors that make us lose the good we ought might win by fearing to attempt.” We must believe that God would not give us a dream that was unable for us to achieve. We’ve got to believe that God gives us the dream and then wants us to go about achieving. So, we have to overcome us, our self-limiting fears and doubts. We have to overcome the fear, the fear and doubt of life that will overcome us.

I love the story about the two evil brothers, Fear and Doubt, who went around from house to house, knocking on people’s doors. When the people would open the door, Fear and Doubt would rush in, ransack the house, and steal the dreams. They went from city to city and state to state and country to country, knocking on people’s doors, rushing in, and stealing dreams. One day, Fear and Doubt came to this beautiful big house. They thought, oh, that’s a great place to go steal the dreams. But they did not know that was the home of their mortal enemies, Faith and Courage. They knocked and knocked on the door, shouting, “Open this door!” Finally, the door swung open, Faith and Courage stood at the door, but there was no one there. They looked up the street and looked down the street, but there was no one there. Why? Because, in the face of Faith and Courage, Fear and Doubt must always disappear. The number one thing is that all we have to overcome is our selves.

Second thing we have to overcome is our self-limiting beliefs, our beliefs that, for some reason, we cannot achieve our goals and dreams. One of the ones that stops many people is a thought and a belief that age is a reason why they can’t live their dreams. Some people think, well, I’m too old to live my dreams. And I always say, what does age have to do with your success? Absolutely nothing.

Col. Sanders was 65 years old when he started Kentucky Fried Chicken. Clara Peller was 82 years old when she did her first television commercial and said, “Where’s the beef?” And George Burns, bless his heart, was 99 years old when he had the nerve to sign a 10-year contract with Caesars Palace. He said he would have signed a 20-year contract, but he didn’t think they’d be in business. The Delaney sisters were in their 90s and decided to write a book. People told them, you’re wasting your time. But they wrote a book called “Having our Say.” It became an international bestselling book, over one hundred weeks on the best sellers list. A Broadway play. A PBS special. They became wealthy after the age of 90 – one was over 100 – because they were willing to not let their age limit them.

Moses got his call to ministry in his 80s, and we’ve all heard his name because he did not let his age limit him. I’m saying to you, don’t let your age limit you. Don’t let your self-limiting thoughts and beliefs keep you from doing all God sent you to do. We’ve got to think big and believe big.

The third one I want to talk about – after we have the inner fear of our fears and doubts, and then our self-limiting beliefs – is hanging out with negative, small-minded, itty bitty, petty-thinking people. People who tell you you can’t do that. It’s not possible. Well, we’ve got to leave them alone and, unfortunately, many of them are in our inner circle. People who we love and they love us, too. They’re not trying to be mean spirited; they just happen to suffer from possibility blindness. They say, oh, so and so tried it and it didn’t work for them. So, they assume it won’t work for you. But that’s not how God works. God can do anything, anytime and He can transform your life. What do you do when they’re in your inner circle? What do you do when they’re in your family and they’re negative? I tell you, here’s what you do: Learn to love them from afar. We’ve got a dream; we’ve got to dream big dreams.

If you ever saw the movie, “Karate Kid,” there was a boy named Daniel who moved into a new area and he wanted to fit in but wasn’t quite doing so. One day, he’s riding his bicycle home and the bullies jump out and attack him. They tear up his bicycle and they are about to tear him up when out of nowhere, Mr. Miyagi shows up. Mr. Miyagi beats up the bullies while Daniel runs home. The next morning, there’s a knock on the door. Daniel opens his door and there’s his bicycle, restored, renewed, better than it had been in the first place. He looked around and saw Mr. Miyagi, who gave him a thumbs up. They became fast friends.

One day, in Mr. Miyagi’s backyard, Mr. Miyagi’s clipping a bonsai tree. Daniel said, “What a beautiful plant.”

Mr. Miyagi said, “I could teach you to do it.”

“No, no, Mr. Miyagi, I don’t have artistic skills.”

“No, I could teach you, Daniel.”

“No, I don’t have those abilities.”

“No, I could teach you.” And the more Mr. Miyagi tried to talk Daniel into it, the more Daniel talked himself out of it. And folks, that’s how most of us are about our dreams and goals. I ask you a question: How many of you have had at least one good idea in your life? Just one? All right, now. How many of you have talked YOU out of at least one good idea in your life? You told yourself you’re too old, you’re too young, you don’t have enough money, you don’t have enough education, you don’t have enough experience, it wouldn’t work!

Well, Mr. Miyagi said to Daniel, “Daniel, you can do it.”

“No, no, no.”

He said, “Okay Daniel, look at the plant.” Daniel looked at it. Miyagi said, “Study it.” Daniel studied it. “Now Daniel, close your eyes. Can you see it in your mind?”

“Yes.”

“Can you see the detail?”

“Yes.”

“Can you see the indentations?”

“Yes.”

“Open your eyes, Daniel.” By the time Daniel would open his eyes, Mr. Miyagi had taken the clipped bonsai tree and replaced it with an unclipped, unfinished bonsai tree. He said, “Now Daniel, work on what you just saw.” If you cannot see it, how will you ever be it? You’ve got to see the possible. You’ve got to dream the incredible. And there are going to be setbacks along the way. You will have some setbacks, but as I told you before, a setback is nothing but a set up for a comeback. And it’s often God’s way of getting you to do your best work.

Years ago, I wanted to be a gospel singer, and I got an invitation to go to Nashville, Tennessee to sing at the Gospel Music Association convention. I was going to be a star. It was like the “American Idol” of Gospel Music. And I was confident. In fact, I was bordering on arrogant. I’m thinking, oh, I’m going to be the next big thing. Well, I went for that big night’s sing-off and everybody got a chance to hear me, and I bombed. It was terrible. I was embarrassed, I was destroyed, devastated. I went to my little hotel room and I cried. My big break, and I’d blown it. And I cried out to the Lord, “What do You want”

And He said, “I want you to trust Me.” And that night I realized that I had been trying to do the wrong thing. I was trying to impress others on how great I was, rather than inspire them on how great God is. And it was at that moment that I shifted my life to say it is not me, it is He who should get the glory. It is He who should get the praise.

If someone likes what I do, I say, “Then don’t think about me. You think about God. It’s God who does the work through me because He’s the secret.” And it was then that I started reading and developing myself. I read a piece one day about the fact that if you want to change your life and recapture your dreams that have been overcome and filled up with negative, what you do is an exercise. You ask yourself to imagine that I went to the doctor, who said, “I got good news and bad news. Bad news, you got one year to live. Good news, the illness you have guarantees that anything you attempt in the next 365 days, you will achieve. It’s impossible for you to fail.”

What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail? Write down ten things. And I wrote down ten things. If I couldn’t fail, maybe I could be a speaker. If I couldn’t fail, maybe I could write a book. If I couldn’t fail, maybe I could do a little television and radio. If I couldn’t fail, maybe I could speak around the country or maybe around the world. Well 20 years have gone by, and most of the things on that list have come true. I still don’t have the plane with my name on it, but I keep dreaming.

I want to give you homework, each one of you. I want you, before this day is over, to ask yourself, “If I only had a year to live and I could not fail at anything I attempt, what ten things would I go after?” Write it down and start to read it. You’ll recapture those dreams. Folks, your dreams have power.

Imagine this scenario. Hot summer day, 1944, Atlanta, Georgia, Morehouse College. We go into the president’s office. His name is Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays. He’s a dignified theologian and educator. There’s a knock on the door. He says, “Come in.” Big wooden door swings open and in the door is a man and a teenage boy. Dr. Mays jumps to his feet to go grab the hand of the man, Martin Luther King, Sr., daddy king. He says, “My old friend, come in.”

Daddy King takes the teenager’s hand, and says, “Come on in, son.” He said, “Dr. Mays, I know you’re busy. I’m not going to take a lot of your time. I just came to introduce you to my son, ML. Oh, his real name is Martin Luther King, Jr., but we call him ML. He’s 15 years old. He’s going to college here in the fall. Fifteen going to college, a very bright boy. And he’s a good boy. He’s never given me a stitch of trouble, but he’s missing something and I need a big favor. No, no, no, I don’t need tuition. It’s bigger than that. No, I don’t need room and board; it’s more critical than that. I came to ask you if you would teach my son how to dream big dreams. Would you teach my boy how to dream the impossible dream?”

Dr. Mays have gave young ML a piece of literature and said, “Read this, young man, and it’ll change your life.” And ML read it every day, and it changed his life.

And one day I got hold of it and I started reading it. I was amazed how it changed my life and I put it in my books. And soon after my books came out, people from other countries and around the country and other parts of the world, from India and Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, China, Japan, Netherlands started reading it and saying, “I read that piece in your book. It changed my life. It’s so profound, yet so simple.”

It simply reads: “It must be born in mind, that the tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goal. No, the tragedy lies in not having a goal to reach for. It is not a calamity to die with your dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideals, but it is a disaster to have no ideals to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure but low aim is sin. You must dream the impossible dream. You must dream the big dream, the crazy dream, the amazing dream cause God can take your dreams and turn them into unbelievable possibilities.”

Oh you’ve got to dream. Oh I want you to dream.

(SINGS) To dream the impossible dream. To fight the unbeatable foe. To bear with unbearable sorrow. To go where the brave dare not go.

To right the un-rightable wrong. To love pure and chaste from afar. To try when your arms are too weary. To reach the unreachable star.

This is my quest to follow that star no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. To be willing to fight without question or pause. To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause.

And I know if I only be true to this perilous quest then my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I’m laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this, oh, that one man scorned and covered with scars still strove with his last ounce of courage to reach the unreachable star, to fight the unbeatable foe, to dream the impossible dream!

Give God glory! Give God glory! Give our God the glory! God bless you!

MY STORY (“LITTLE”): MY TESTIMONY

“The truth is anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done and even greater works, because I’m going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the Father. Yes, ask anything in my name, and I will do it.”

John 14:12-14

MY STORY (“LITTLE”): MY TESTIMONY

“Life is far too important to be taken seriously.”

You can’t have a testimony without a test”

Submitter’s Note (Prologue):

A bit of background…so that you readers “out there”can see where I’m coming from (not Mars hopefully!. I’m not particularly “religious, as I didn’t receive a “churchy” upbringing in my former home, the  “Christian” country of  “white” South Africa in the fifties and sixties,  However, I’m way more “spiritual (“we’re all spiritual beings on an earthly journey”…or is that the other way round??)”

My family lived by basic good values and the “Golden Rule: Treat others as you’d like to be treated…. and taught me those principles. My dad give me his very old Bible (that he’d been given by his dad) at a young age and dad said that it served to comfort him through the war years (incidentally he was an eye- witness to the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck: “There are no atheists in a life-boat”). My dear mother was a truly free spirit who was very interested in Indian teachings (philosophy), particularly Krisnamurthi and Gandhi and devotedly studied their teachings,

Over the years all the family  (including extended) become followers of Christ (“rather religious”), regularly attending church, except for “the resisters” mom and I. Mom because she said the church used “mind control”  and the religious dogma contradicted her basic Eastern Krishnamurthian beliefs . I too found  the “churchy people” I knew way “too straight” (no judging now, craig!), as throughtout my life I seemed to collect ” an assortment of odd-bod eccentrics”  (instead of stamps and bottle-tops!). Still do, by the way!

Many many years later (after some dear friends had continued praying for me that I’d ever “see the light” (they never gave up hope on me) *, after yet another life-crisis (my life is one long ongoing one!), my life was transformed.

On a trip back to the “Beloved Country”, South Africa to see my very ill dad in 1995 (as well as seeking ideas to write yet another book on the NEW country, I questioned my dear sister, Glenda and her Kiwi-born husband, Steve on why so many South Africans had the Christian faith. Glenda  replied “Craig, we need something to hang on to, something to hope for… on which we can pin our faith.”  And when I asked ‘what is Christianity’and ‘What Do Christians believe?’, she replied

“It means having a relationship (living) with God!”

Spooky??

I couldn’t understand those words at the time (she could have been “speaking Martian to me”)… yet a seed had been planted in my little head!

* I had often made jokes about Christians: ones like

“When was motor racing first mentioned in the Bible?

When Moses came forth in his triumph”?

“Jesus saves at the Trust Bank”, “Moses shoots, Jesus saves”, etc

*

However, I had taken a few tentative first few steps on the road to becoming a “free-spirited, thinking follower of the teachings of Christ”. Hopefully not a “goody-goody Mr Two shoes boring Christian” (I couldn’t be that anyway – no matter how hard I tried as I’d lost the other shoe on my crazy European travels in my “wild”youth). So mom and I had great discussions on how Christ’s teachings were very similar to the teachings of Buddhism. It wasn’t religion , but a CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS… which is what transforms lives! She and her church friends prayed for my dad and he got better….although my own life was in pieces, shattered, like Humpty Dumpty (that’s a simile, by the way). On reflection, I realize I had become “way too serious” and feeling so alone here in provincial New Zealand. I was trying to do far too much on my own with the weight of the world on my shoulders (narrow).

Now with “a relationship with God’ (which is the basis of Christianity), I realise everything in my life has somehow led me to this point. Though for so many years, I’didn’t know about God, nor know God, God DID know all about me and cared deeply about me. The Ultimate Source, Ground of All Being  had a plan for my “little” life. I just had to be led by Infinite Spirit to find it for myself.

I don’t attend church (though one of my very good friends is a pastor at a local church and have many great discussions with other good friends, some very religious “fundamentalists”, including “the Prophet”)… but read widely on “spiritual mattters”, including studying other religions (fascinating to me, as I look for common ground between them). I really love studying the human mind mind , the “last unexplored frontier” and the “overlap between the mind and the spiritual dimension.

OK enough of me and my background in this field and what has led me to this point in my life…and on with this piece…

PS: Sorry about all the i’s (“eyes”) in this “self-centred” piece of writing. Please forgive the author in a spirit of reconciliation!

TESTIMONY

These are the verses from the Prophet Isiaih read out by my good friend Bruce at my baptism at Mangapa Church in Gisborne in 1996… when I was in the deepest valley.

“I will lead the blind by ways

they have not known,

along unfamiliar paths

I will guide then:

I will turn the darkness into light before them

and make the rough places smooth.

These are the things I will do;

I will not forsake them.”

“Here is my servant,

whom I uphold,

my chosen one

in whom I delight;

I will put my Spirit on him

and he will bring justice

to the nations.”

– Isiaih 42

and

“Fear not,

for I have redeemed you;

I have summoned you by name,

you are mine.

When you pass through the waters,

I will be with you;

and when you pas through the rivers,

they will not sweep over you.

When you walk through the fire,

you will not be burned;

the flames will not set you ablaze.

For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.

Since you are precious

and honoured in my sight,

and because I love you.

Do not be afraid.”

Now many years later Bruce, his lovely wife Colleen and I can laugh and wonder how God has really “worked miracles” in my life in the intervening years. Even though I no longer attend formal church and Bruce and Colleen have been in the UK for an extended period doing great work in reaching out to “marginalised” people.  Such a lovely couple and very dear friends (and X calls them  “my only normal friends”)

* Incidentally the words from Isiaih 43 were also read out to me by my sister, Glenda’s “church family” from Cape Town on my traumatic visit to South Africa in October 1995 (a bit more on that period of my life coming up)

Remember that the first and greatest commandment to the Israelites was : “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”, which is a pre-requirement to the second:“Love your neighbour as yourself”.

From Mark 12:28-31,

Now fifteen or so years later, so much has changed in my “little” life. After being in the depths of the valley of life those long years ago, I feel daily inspired by the Holy Spirit and ask Jesus for a triple helping each day (thanks, my good friend, Lindsay, the “Prophet”) . My relationship with God through Jesus is more real than ever before since I started out on the journey nearly twenty long years ago. And everything flows from that … “a peace that surpasses all understanding”

Daily I renew my relationship with God and my faith through following Jesus’s commandment (most important of all):  “To love the Lord, your God with all your strength, heart, mind and soul.”

“Ask ANYTHING in My name so that the Father will be glorified through the work of the Son… and I will do it.

– John 14:13,14

So I thought I’d try that, test the teaching some years back. Crazy?? I didn’t ask God for riches and fame. I asked Him to make me successful as a writer by making some small difference in the world through impacting and empowering as many people around the world as possible . Seemingly impossible from a small city near the bottom of the world with no friends, no contacts in a foreign country. Still I just did what I could do, daily writing diligently on the net and trusting. And one day I hope to deliver this testimony, this true story of my own journey to encourage those in the “pits” of life…without hope.

As former US President Richard Nixon once said so eloquently: “Only when you’ve been in the deepest valley can one know what’s it’s like to stand on the highest peak.”

Yes, those moving words have great significance for me. As I’ve been there too in a very dark period, some chapters of my rather eventful life. I don’t want to “go there” in much detail here (that can perhaps be a book in itself!), as it was such a traumatic time of bad memories – relocation from my beloved country of South Africa, marriage break-up, losing nearly everything, life savings in a scam… and being devoid of hope.  Yet as Gandhi said: “in the midst of darkness light exists.”

“I don’t know the future, but I do know Who holds the future in His hands.”  I just know that this writing path is my calling, my “life mission”.

My last “little” message: No matter how dire your situation (and mine really was pretty bleak and I had nothing to offer Him, but myself and TRUST that things would eventually work out. So said some Christian friends and family in South Africa.

Yes, Jesus DOES have the power to do ANYTHING… to transform any life, YOUR life…for good , just as He did with mine… stilling the stormy waters as the tiny boat got tossed about like a cork in the vast ocean that is the maelstrom, the whirl=pool of life.

My life was transformed ..but ONLY when I relinquished control (not that I had any as events in my life had spiralled into a dizzying descent of destruction… and anyway I had no other choice, but to hand over to my “co-pilot”

So if my life could be rescued, so can anyone’s, YOURS!

“Fear not,

for I have redeemed you;

I have summoned you by name,

you are mine.

When you pass through the waters,

I will be with you;

and when you pass through the rivers,

they will not sweep over you.

When you walk through the fire,

you will not be burned;

the flames will not set you ablaze.

For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.

Since you are precious

and honoured in my sight,

and because I love you.

Do not be afraid.”

Finally remember the words of Jeremiah 29:11

“‘For I know the thoughts that I think towards you’, says the Lord. Thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you future and a hope.”

So make your plans, your dreams big enough for God to fit in.

God can dream a bigger dream than you can ever imagined for yourself”

“Lord, Expand my horizons, my sense of possibility for all the rich promises you have in store for me”

craig (as inspired by the testimony of Joshua Graham on The Hour of Power TV program and his book ‘Dark Room’

7th (“lucky”) Sept in the year 2012

“In the midst of darkness light exists.”

PS:

“The truth is anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done and even greater works, because I’m going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the Father. Yes, ask anything in my name, and I will do it.”

John 14:12-14

“If I can throw a single ray of light across the darkened pathway of another;
if I can aid some soul to clearer sight of life and duty, and thus bless my brother;
if I can wipe from any human cheek a tear,
I shall not have lived my life in vain while here.
If I can guide some erring one to truth, inspire within his heart a sense of duty;
if I can plant within my soul of rosy youth a sense of right, a love of truth and
beauty;
if I can teach one man that God and heaven are near,
I shall not then have lived in vain while here.
If from my mind I banish doubt and fear, and keep my life attuned to love and kindness;
if I can scatter light and hope and cheer, and help remove the curse of mental blindness;
if I can make more joy, more hope, less pain,
I shall not have lived and loved in vain.
If by life’s roadside I can plant a tree, beneath whose shade some wearied head may rest,
though I may never share its
beauty, I shall yet be truly blest –
though no one knows my name, nor drops a flower upon my grave,
I shall not have lived in vain while here.”

Today, don’t just try to make a living… try to make a difference

What seemed an impossible dream to me fifteen years or so ago has somehow materialised far far bigger than I could ever have imagined… and in spite of the very difficult circumstances I found myself in, have had quite a bit of fun along the journey, this “unexplored path”.

So I recently asked the Father what’s the “most impossible” thing I could ever ask for

Peace in the Middle East???  Ha ha!

Possible???

A glimmer of hope…perhaps???

Let’s see what happens and have some more fun along the amazing journey …”the road less travelled”!

ONE DREAM ENDS, ANOTHER BEGINS

The story, the never-ending story of life continues…

A NEW DAWN, A BREAKING DAWN

“just another dreamer”

“Life is God’s novel. Let him write it”

– Isaac Bashevis Singer

“Just as history is sometimes known as ‘His story’ , life itself is God’s novel; so let God, the Ultimate Source, the Ground of All Being write the very best, never-ending story of possibility, that is your unique journey down the river of life.”

– craig (as inspired by the words of Isaac Bashevis Singer)
