A Vision of Hope for Our Time

Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu has long been admired throughout the world for the heroism and grace he exhibited while encouraging countless South Africans in their struggle for human rights. In ‘God Has a Dream’, his most soul-searching book, he shares the spiritual message that guided him through those troubled times. Drawing on personal and historical examples, Archbishop Tutu reaches out to readers of all religious backgrounds, showing how individual and global suffering can be transformed into joy and redemption. With his characteristic humour, Tutu offers an extremely personal and liberating message. He helps us to “see with the eyes of the heart” and to cultivate the qualities of love, forgiveness, humility, generosity, and courage that we need to change ourselves and our world.

Echoing the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., he writes, “God says to you, ‘I have a dream. Please help me to realize it. It is a dream of a world whose ugliness and squalor and poverty, its war and hostility, its greed and harsh competitiveness, its alienation and disharmony are changed into their glorious counterparts. When there will be more laughter, joy, and peace, where there will be justice and goodness and compassion and love and caring and sharing. I have a dream that my children will know that they are members of one family, the human family, God’s family, my family.'”

Addressing the timeless and universal concerns all people share, God Has a Dream envisions a world transformed through hope and compassion, humility and kindness, understanding and forgiveness

Editorial Review – Reed Business Information (c) 2003 Reading this book is like having a long, and somewhat homiletical, afternoon tea with former Archbishop of Cape Town and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Tutu. Four years after No Future Without Forgiveness, Tutu’s reflection on his role as Chairman of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, comes this deeply personal book that Tutu calls “a cumulative expression of my life’s work.” Each chapter begins “Dear Child of God,” and goes on to reflect on vulnerability, transfiguration and the human condition with winding anecdotes from Tutu’s personal and public life, stories he delivers with his trademark humour and a deceptive simplicity. For example, when Tutu says we are all one family, what emerges is not some churchy optimism, but a highly developed theology of relationship, what Tutu has earlier called ubuntu (“a person is a person through other people”), with political as well as interpersonal implications. This book is highly readable, perhaps because, like other Tutu books, it is culled in large part from lectures and sermons delivered in Tutu’s very public life. That this book aims for more than an afternoon tea becomes clear at its close: we are God’s partners, Tutu exhorts. We are humanized or dehumanized in and through our actions toward others. Tutu grounds this appeal most concretely, ending with a list of Web sites from organizations that need more partners for their outreach. (Mar. 23)

Desmond Tutu’s best-selling inspirational book for a general audience, now available in paperback ‘God Has A Dream’ is an extremely personal and liberating message of hope and light in dark times. In it, the Archbishop shows how important it is that, even as we face the harsh realities of our individual lives and global conditions, we remember the importance of hope and dreams – for it is on hope and dreams that a better future will be built, and that God’s dream for us will be fulfilled. And Tutu also demonstrates how to bring these dreams to fruition in very practical terms, for example in learning how to love, ridding ourselves of our prejudices, opposing injustice, promoting the qualities of forgiveness, humility and generosity in ourselves, taking time to be still and quiet and in being patient. Meant not only for a Christian audience, but also for those of all faiths – and none – who are drawn to a life of more inspiration and integrity, ‘God Has A Dream’ is highly readable and very relevant to the times we live in. Instead of being a political document (as was his previous book No Future Without Forgiveness) this is a major work of contemporary spirituality from a Church leader known for his charisma, robust approach and humour.

GOALS:
“A wish is just a wish, A New Years Resolution is just a resolution. Goals have deadlines and are stepping stones down the path, the stair-case to your
dreams.”

“Meeting a goal takes dedication, effort and sacrifice and all that it takes to turn a goal into a dream is TIME.”

“Great people are just ordinary people, who usually find themselves in extra-ordinary situations…and who possess extra-ordinary amounts of determination.”

“A man (OOPS, or woman) without a dream is destined never to fulfil his or her full potential in life. Never give up on your dream… but take time to smell the flowers on your very individual journey. Be yourself and daily count your blessings; then try to make a difference in the world – however small. Try to shine your own little ray of sunshine to make the lives of others easier in some small way.

You can derive the greatest pleasure from treading the wildest uncertain path down the ‘river of life…and just being you.”

“We can all use the internet to reach out to the ‘global community’ and build a better world in this new ‘Information Revolution’, that is upon us. Let’s use it wisely, respect our diversity and unique cultures; yet celebrate a new world in union. It is up to each one of us to spark the strong creative spirit that is within each one of us. If set alight, it is a unique contribution to the world, that will burn brightly for future generations and make your personal VISION of the future a REALITY…and may perhaps even be your ‘unique DESTINY and legacy on this planet’.”

“My writing mission is through my words to inform, illuminate, entertain, uplift, delight, as well as hopefully even inspiring people. I aim to do this by sharing my knowledge and life experiences – through supporting, encouraging and empowering others to be the best person they can possibly be.”

“I truly want to let the light shine through my words to impact and help others…to inspire people throughout our (sometimes happy and sometimes dark and sad (yet always beautiful and magical) world.”

“Whether you’re a candle in a corner, or a beacon on a hill, let your light shine brightly.”

“When you can see no light at the end of the tunnel, light your own candle and let your light illuminate the world, like the radiance from a window at midnight.” That’s a
metaphor, BTW

“Life is about finding, then following the dream… and one’s dream/vision comes to reality through believing in yourself, making the commitment and then creating it.”

“Whatever, you want to do or dream you can do, the hardest part is making a beginning. Once you take that first step in following your passion, the rest will follow
naturally…and lead to who know’s where.”

“I believe it is our responsibility (or CHOICE) as human beings to ‘serve’ others through sharing our ‘God-given’ abilities, knowledge, experiences and especially talents.
These are our gifts from our Creator; but what we do with those talents is our ‘gift to God’. I want to light a candle of hope and love, by shining my own ‘little light’
(note alliteration!) on the world as brightly as I can. This spirit is my ‘little gift’ to God, Life, the Universe, Infinite Spirit, the Ultimate Source.”

“Become the person you are CAPABLE of being … and ALL the person God, Our Creator intended us to become.”

Let the light of your BEING shine brightly; so revealing Who You Really Are. Be a Bringer of the Light, which emanates from our soul, God, our Creator, the Source, the Essence of Life (and Ground of our very Being).
Therefore, it can do more than illuminate your own path. YOUR spirit will help makes the lives of others easier by illuminating others paths.

For this light is our humanity, the spirit of God, truth, wisdom, beauty and especially love…and it lies within each one of us. Through your actions and your being, let your light, YOUR spirit truly shine brightly on the world, like the radiance emitted by a candle at midnight.”
– Craig Lock (inspired by and adapted from Neale Donald Walsh in ‘Conversations with God’ Book 3).

“Success to others may be apparent in what you DO; but significance, meaning and purpose lies, then reveals itself in what you ARE and BECOME down the ‘river of life’ – how and the spirit with which you face, then overcome the daily obstacles, the frequent trials and tribulations along the often rocky path-way of life’s magical and mysterious journey. Light your path brightly.”

” I truly believe we can ALL create and enthuse magic into ‘so-called humdrum little lives’. You don’t just have to be the choreographer, or the conductor of your life script – rather paint your life as the masterpiece it could (one day) be. There is a rich tapestry of talent in every human soul, that flows through the spirit of God. So don’t spend your days stringing and tuning your instrument; start making and playing your unique tunes of music right now.”

“The task ahead of you can always be overcome by the power within you…and the often seemingly difficult or even “impassible”) path ahead of you is never as steep with the great spirit that lies within you.”

“Do not follow the well-beaten track of others towards success – like the rainbow, it is often an illusion always just beyond our reach. Make your own path and let your spirit blaze a brilliant trail towards the pot of gold, the prize for the gift – one that is uniquely you and YOUR successful journey down the mysterious and magical river of life.

“Even when your own light appears to be extinguished, another human being may light that candle once more,
turning it someday into a bright flame… somewhere, somehow”

“When the world is filled with love, people’s hearts are overflowing with hope.”

All these thoughts (quotations) may be freely published. If these words bring comfort, encouragement, joy, peace of mind or perhaps even inspiration and hope to anyone struggling in the often very difficult and harsh circumstances of life, that we sometimes find ourselves in, then I’m very happy.

It’s in OUR Hands to Give Peace a Chance (from http://peacepursuit.wordpress.com/)

The world is full of horror, because we do nothing to end it writes PHWAY AYE…

For generations, it has been the aching dream of humanity. Marked on the face of every man and every woman, it has been a search so powerful, it defined humanity’s very existence. Driven by our moral and spiritual obligations, it has been a search towards which millions have turned their hearts and souls. This has been our search for world peace.

From the beginning, the human race has always questioned the possibility of a peaceful world, rid of war, violence and poverty. We dreamed of a world, so composed, it embraced its diversities, settled on its differences and sought, day in and day out, to help all those in need.

Will this dream of a global peace ever be achievable? Will a time ever come when peace was not just a dream, but a way of life? Or is the human race condemned by nature to live in this constant throbbing search for something we were never, essentially meant to find?

I came across these most uplifting words by a young New Zealand student… and they fitted perfectly into the book I’m working on and the central themes of the manuscript Though you may perhaps see these writings through the eyes of words inspired by the “idealism of youth”, far removed from the “realpolitik” of todays world, I think they have real merit and are beautifully written with much feeling and passion. So here is an extract from Phwaye’s powerful and inspiring article, that I’m sharing (with Phway’s permission). Enjoy…

“IT’S IN OUR HANDS TO GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”

A better world will not be achieved unless we take it in OUR hands to do something about it. We can’t expect a world of peace to come about, if we are not willing to put in the effort.

We can’t deny the mistakes of the past. Neither can we fix them. But what we can do is try to understand. Like each and every one of us, the world had to make its own mistakes. But mistakes are made to be learned from, and this is our time to learn. A better world will not be achieved, unless we take it into our hands to do something about it. We can’t expect a world of peace to come about, if we are not willing to put in the effort.

The future of humanity sits on our shoulders. Do we want our children and grandchildren to look back on us and ask why we were so stupid? Why we didn’t realise the enormity of our mistakes? Why we sat back and watched it all pass by? The world is full of horrors; not because of those who do harm, but because of those who do nothing about it.

We cannot keep ignoring these cries. Our job isn’t to step back and keep applying new bandage after bandage to old wounds. Our job is to strip the world of its old bandages and find a way to heal those wounds.

We cannot stop the war in Iraq, feed all the children in Africa, or put an end to poverty. We cannot bring about peace and change to the world in one go. But we can work to rebuild it little by little in the small things we do in our lives. Change will only come when each of us takes responsibility for finding peace within ourselves and with the people around us.

World peace will not happen overnight. It will not happen in our lifetime, or in 20. But what we do know is that it must. In fact it is inevitable. It is only our job to CHOOSE so.

“I Dream With a Passion of Turning Hatred Into Love”

I find it difficult to understand the sum of a person’s life. Some people would tell you it’s made up from the ones you leave behind; some say from love; others say life has no meaning at all.

Me? Well I believe you measure your life by the people who measure their lives by yours.

The long journey to make your dreams come true is almost indescribable, yet extremely difficult; because no matter how hard you may strive to accomplish your dreams, there will always be an obstacle or obstacles to block your way. For there are many things a person is not willing to sacrifice. Am I right?

These obstacles distract you from striving further. And most people find this difficult, because it’s human nature to get distracted. Therefore, to make your dreams come true, you must find a way to remove the obstacle; so you may finally see the seldom seen path you could, one day walk down, the path that will make your dreams come true. If you can focus your thoughts on the journey alone, you will definitely succeed.

I want to write books that change people’s lives, change the way they think and feel… stories of transformation, renewal and especially hope. To complete my true tale, I must study people’s feelings and try to change others feelings of hatred… and fully change them for the better in some way. This is the meaning of life, this is the purpose of existence. This is my dream, something I simply MUST accomplish.

One sunny day I’ll change a person so much (for the better) that in a state of “blissful enlightenment I’ll know the real meaning of life: what true love is. Then I’ll know that when my time on earth comes to an end, my eyes will be closed, but my heart (new) will be open.”

I DREAM WITH A PASSION OF TURNING HATRED INTO LOVE

I find it difficult to understand the sum of a person’s life. Some people would tell you it’s made up from the ones you leave behind; some say from love; others say life has no meaning at all.

Me? Well I believe you measure your life by the people who measure their lives by yours.

If you can focus your thoughts on the journey alone, you will definitely succeed. *

What are my dreams? This is something every generation asks. A dream I have is to write an internationally best selling novel. I work on ideas for my hoped for novel every day. This is a task you must do,if you want your dreams to come true.

Being passionate is a key attribute. There are many other tasks I know I have to choose and complete, if this dream of mine will ever come true.

My story is not a story; but a blend of a tale and a true story. It’s about the sum of my life and it’s about every deed I do, did and plan on doing… to attempt to widen people’s consciousness from anger to happiness, from envy to acceptance and mostly, from hatred to love.

I want to write books that change people’s lives, change the way they think and feel… stories of transformation, renewal and especially hope. To complete my true tale, I must study people’s feelings and try to change others feelings of hatred… and fully change them for the better in some way. SUCCESS

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

“To love someone more dearly every day To help some wandering child to find its way To ponder over noble thoughts and pray And smile when evening galls. If we could but recognise our common humanity, that we do belong together, that our destinies are bound up in one another’s, that we can be free only together, that we can be human only together, then a glorious world would come into being where all of us lived harmoniously together as members of one family, the human family. Differences are not intended to seperate, to alienate. We are different precisely in order to realise our need of one another.

People are really wonderful. The only way we can survive is together, black and white; the only way we can be truly human is together, black and white.

Let us come together and be one, let us be people of peace, let us be people of harmony.”

Those who forget the past, as many have pointed out, are doomed to repeat it.

One has got to say to our people, ‘I love you, I care for you, enormously.’ And when I care about black liberation, it is because I care about white liberation.

HOPE

We humans can tolerate suffering, but we cannot tolerate meaninglessness (As Viktor Frankl said in his book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’)..

At times of despair, we must learn to see with new eyes.

PEACE

“Peace without justice is an impossibility.

Peace involves inevitable righteousness, justice, wholesomeness, fulness of life, participation in decision making, goodness, laughter, joy, compassion, sharing and reconciliation.

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light… and where there is sadness, joy. I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

– St Francis of Assisi (thanks, drearest mom for sharing those inspirational words with me)

“God needs human beings ‘working’ in partnership to help make peace become a reality in the world. God works through the hands and minds of ‘ordinary people’, who attempt extraordinary things through making ‘seemingly unrealistic’ decisions and are sustained by the amazing power of faith.” – craig

Thanks for being such a channel of inspiration and hope… and an instrument of peace (even at times of severe provocation) throughout your life, Archbishop Tutu

A “REVIEW”: HOPE, LOVE, DREAM, BELIEVE, PEACE (from the words and inspiration of Desmond Tutu)

Submitter’s Note:

Craig was privileged to hear Desmond Tutu speak many times and has been collecting (and been ‘inspired by’) the churchman’s most uplifting and inspirational thoughts and quotations over many years. I was kindly given the gift of this great series of booklets from the words and inspiration of the former Archbishop of Cape Town, so am sharing a few thoughts from the great little book ‘BELIEVE’ (together with a few of my own) in the spirit of encouraging and uplifting others… because , I believe it’s in the small things we do that make a difference in the world. So ENJOY….

LOVE DREAM

BELIEVE PEACE

(published by Ubuntu, which roughly translated, means humanity towards others, ie. “I am because of who and what we ALL are”)

The 20th century’s most remarkable humanitarians. Take inspiration from the African concept ‘ubuntu’, which shows that the only way we can ever be human is together. The only way we can be free is together. Each book is founded on the work and example of one of the 20th century’s most remarkable humanitarians. I think these books are available from major booksellers and at Amazon. Royalties (kindly) to Tygerburg Children’s Hospital and Philani Clinic in Cape Town . Thanks Archbishop Tutu for sharing your great generosity of spirit throughout your life.

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

THE POWER OF LOVE

EQUALITY IS ESSENTIAL TO HUMAN LIFE AND WELL-BEING.

A Ministry (Mission) of Reconciliation (the mission of Jesus)

“To love someone more dearly every day To help some wandering child to find its way To ponder over noble thoughts and pray And smile when evening galls. To seek the Truth as blind men long for light To do our best from dawn till night To keep our hearts fit for His Holy sight And answer when He calls.”

“We are true witnesses, if we are on the side of the weak, the powerless, the exploited.” (Just as Jesus was a voice for the “voiceless”.)

“If I diminish you, I diminish myself.”

“I am what I am because of what we all are.” A person is a person through other persons. We need other human beings in order to be human. I am because other people are.

FORGIVENESS

“Forgiveness is not an occasional act – it is an attitude of mind.” – Martin Luther King

Forgiveness gives us the capacity to make a new start… And forgiveness is the grace by which you enable the other person to get up with dignity to begin anew…In the act of forgiveness we are declaring our faith in the future of a relationship and in the capacity of the wrongdoer to change.

‘For true reconciliation is a deeply personal matter. It can only happen between persons who assert their own personhood and who acknowledge and respect that of others.’

– Extract from a speech given at Steve Biko’s funeral, September 1977

We have a capacity to feed all and yet millions starve, because we seem to lack the moral and political will to do what we know is right.

It is unity we are talking about, not uniformity. What is needed is to respect one another’s points of view as a ‘person of integrity’. Our maturity will be judged by how well we are able to agree to disagree and yet continue to love (and respect) one another…and to cherish one another and seek the greater good of the other.” (Inaugeration as first black Archbishop of Cape Town, Sept 1988)

Instead of separation and division, all distinctions make for a rich diversity to be celebrated for the sake of the unity that underlies them. We are different, so that we can know our need of one another.”

“When you forgive (another person or country), you empty your mind of negative thoughts (perhaps even thoughts as strong as hate). Then the infinite Spirit of God makes a fresh space in our hearts to allow new positive feelings to take their place.. to pour into our hearts. The ‘freed’ person then moves forward with a new spirit…which takes root in people’s minds, hearts, spirits and even in the deepest recesses of their souls.” – craig A last thought…. LET YOUR LIFE BE A LIVING EPISTLE TO GOD

And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” – John 8:32

“To everything there is a season, A time for everything under heaven. A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing. A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to weep and a time to throw away; A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace.”

He believes in the great potential of every human being in the journey of life and loves to encourage people to share their individual spirits, so that they become all that they are CAPABLE of being.

The various books that Craig “felt inspired to write” are available at:http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B005GGMAW4 and http://www.creativekiwis.com/amazon.html

Together, one mind, one soul at a time, let’s see how many people we can impact, empower, encourage and perhaps even inspire to reach their fullest potentials. Change YOUR world and you help change THE world.”

THESE THOUGHTS MAY BE FREELY PUBLISHED (with acknowledgment to the source, thanks)

Shine YOUR own bright light on humanity.

Sharing some Thoughts to Live By (and “put a smile on your dial”… hopefully May 2001)

GOALS: “A wish is just a wish, A New Years Resolution is just a resolution. Goals have deadlines and are stepping stones down the path, the stair-case to your dreams.”

“When you can see no light at the end of the tunnel, light your own candle and let your light illuminate the world, like the radiance from a window at midnight.” That’s a metaphor, BTW

“Life is about finding, then following the dream… and one’s dream/vision comes to reality through believing in yourself, making the commitment and then creating it.”

“Whatever, you want to do or dream you can do, the hardest part is making a beginning. Once you take that first step in following your passion, the rest will follow naturally…and lead to who know’s where.”

“I believe it is our responsibility (or CHOICE) as human beings to ‘serve’ others through sharing our ‘God-given’ abilities, knowledge, experiences and especially talents. These are our gifts from our Creator; but what we do with those talents is our ‘gift to God’. I want to light a candle of hope and love, by shining my own ‘little light’ (note alliteration!) on the world as brightly as I can. This spirit is my ‘little gift’ to God, Life, the Universe, Infinite Spirit, the Ultimate Source.”
