The Spiritual Path: “The Way”: What is God?

THE SPIRITUAL PATH: “THE WAY”

by craig lock and others

What is God? I’ve thought a lot about God over the years

The idea for this e-book came from (and was inspired by) my research and study into the fascinating book ‘OVERDRIVE: FORMULA ONE IN THE ZONE’ by Clyde Brolin, as well as my own contemplations of the spiritual journey over the years.

The fascinating book and fresh perspective on Grand Prix motor racing ‘OVERDRIVE: FORMULA ONE IN THE ZONE’

by Clyde Brolin

Web site: www.overdrivef1.com

This unique book looking into the minds of Grand Prix drivers is published by Vatersay Books (first published Feb 2010)

Just had the idea today (7am 14th December 2011), so here it is.

I’ll keep adding to my thoughts, as they tell a bit of my own thoughts and journey along the “spiritual path”.

*

This is my favourite and sums up very simply my message, my life…in trying in some small way to break down barriers between people.

“I had a good chance to meet a yogi who was so spiritual and happy all the time. I wondered how he managed his thinking and I learned a lot from him. I saw him and I thought, ‘This is the way.’ You believe in a God, but not in a religious way. We human beings like to give him names, whether that is Jesus or whatever else. But my view is that God is ONE, whether it is Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, almost anything, and that he is everywhere. He (or she) has (no gender), colour, no religion, no race, nothing. It’s incredible how close he is to you and to everybody. You just call him (her/It) and he’s there. That’s it, simple.

This is the reality we so often forget.”

– Balbir Singh, former physio-therapist and confidant  to Michael Schumacher (and student of psychology).

(With my little additional few  words in brackets)

“In the future I hope to write a small book to help someone to find this way. That’s my dream.”

– Balbir Singh,

From: www.overdrivef1.com

It’s my shared dream too, Balbir. …so here it is!

There will be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.”

Submitter’s Note:

This information that I’m sharing is sourced from an excellent and insightful book titled ‘TOMORROW’S GOD’ by Neale Donald Walsch (published by Hodder and Stoughton, a division of Hodder Headline).

This article (in point form) was largely based upon notes , whilst studying the link between the human mind (psychology) and spirituality. Whilst I may not agree with all of Walsch’s views and beliefs on the concept of God, a “Higher Power’, I’m sharing this piece to hopefully stimulate thinking and discussion on these concepts from Walsh’s personal ideas and beliefs on the ‘airey-fairey spiritual journey’ (and do ‘try to test’, further explore and then apply these principles in ‘real life’).

I have taken what I feel to be the main points, directly as they appeared in Chapter Twelve of Walsch’s thought-provoking great new book (together with a few additional points of my own – in brackets). Hope this piece (including a few thoughts of my own) may be of interest to you too.

Enjoy

*
THE JESUS FACTOR

(from ‘TOMORROW’S GOD‘ by Neale Donald Walsch)

“Slowly and gradually, out of a rich experience of the world, one builds a faith.”

God and I are one! That is, God is within each one of us. Jesus taught that we and God are One, but that no one wanted to believe it; because it did not serve the human agenda. Jesus was and is a saviour to all humankind. He knew Who He Really Was and his mission. So he declared it, his sense of mission and ‘unity of purpose’ for all to hear.

He declared something else. He said that what he did on the earth, we could also do (see John 12). By elevating and expanding His own consciousness, together with a high level of FAITH is the key to experiencing these gifts. That was the central message that Jesus taught.

“According to your faith, be it unto you.”
“Oh woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” And the woman’s daughter was made whole from that very hour!
“If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, ‘Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you.”
– Jesus’s words

Still if we cannot believe in ourselves and in our own divine heritage (and because so many people cannot), Jesus in an act of enormous love and compassion, invites us to believe in Him. (That was why He invited us, gently, to go to God, the Creator of the Universe THROUGH Him.)

“Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth in me, the works that I do, shall he also do; and greater works than these he shall do, because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I WILL do it.”

This was an extra-ordinary promise. So great and so complex was Jesus’s understanding of who He was and of who we are (“I and my Father are one”). He knew deeply that there was no limit to what we could do, if we believed in ourselves, or in Him.

So great was His love for all humankind, and so full was his compassion for their suffering, that he called upon Himself to rise to the highest level, to move to the grandest expression of his being, in order to present a living example to all human beings everywhere.

And then He prayed that we would not only see the evidence of His Oneness with the Father, but our own Oneness with God as well.

It was a marvellous inspiration for him to invite those who could not imagine themselves to be a part of God to imagine themselves to be a part of Him. He knew that it would be easier for us to see ourselves as “Brothers in Christ” than as One with God!
“I and my Father are one (John 10:30). That is: God is within EACH ONE of us.
“And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one.” (John 17:22)

He stated repeatedly the truth of our oneness with God.
And if Jesus Christ was One with God, then so too are we. We simply do not know it, refuse to believe it and cannot imagine it!
(Because we may think too “lowly”).

So Jesus gently invited us to follow him…to go through him to God, our Creator (because most of us don’t believe we can do it directly). So he said: “I am the Life and the Way. Live your life as I live mine, go the way I’ve gone, ie. follow me – and you will experience God.

That is the truth I came to reveal to you. I came not to humble you, but to exalt you. Not to put you down, but to raise you up.

In essence, Jesus is saying: ‘I am the Life and the Way. Live your life as I live mine, go the way I’ve gone, ie. follow me – and you will experience God’. That is the truth I came to reveal to you. I came not to humble you, but to exalt you; not to put you down, but to raise you up.

His message was that he was greater than none, nor is any one greater than any other, for You are all One.

Jesus, like other masters and messengers (like Buddha, Abraham, Krishna, Moses and Mohammed) LOVE you today as they did in their times on planet earth. Jesus INVITES you today, as those other masters did then to accept and embrace the wonder and glory of Who You Are. He repeated these truths frequently, so that we would get the message.

His message was that he was greater than none, nor is any one greater than any other, for You are all One.

(Jesus Christ chose to live with the “highest thoughts” and consequently lived at the highest level of humanity as “son of man”.) Jesus said what He said and did what He did – that you may know who He was… and thus know also Who YOU Are.
Often what is hard for us to believe about ourselves, we can believe about another – and Jesus knew this! That was His mission: precisely what He knew and why He chose do do what He did …in life and in
death. Thus, it is not Jesus’s death that can save us, but his LIFE!

We are the hope of humanity
YOU too can CHOOSE to be the HOPE OF HUMANITY

Craig is studying the teachings of different religions, as he researches and writes his latest novel ‘A New Dawn’, set in the Middle East: To attempt to find ‘common ground’/principles between different religions and cultures. And as he learns from his research, is sharing these notes in an attempt to ‘enlighten’ (himself and perhaps others) about different religious faiths. As I “try to grow” spiritually, I am sharing some of the author’s writings on this most significant man, for you to ponder on (if you so choose) – the person who Christians believe to be ‘God in human form’), whose life and
death 2000 years ago largely shaped human history and our beliefs about life (and what is indeed possible to achieve!). I am motivated, perhaps “inspired” to share these ‘eternal truths’ about Jesus by Neale Donald Walsch, so that all our lives may greatly benefit in many ways.

P.S: These powerful, deep and moving words have great significance to me in my journey…and this is my reason for sharing…

“The moment of your greatest darkness may yet become your grandest gift. As you are gifted, so too will you gift others, giving to them the highest treasure: to BE THEMSELVES.

What we learn in the darkness, we are to share in the eternal light.
Let this be your task, let this be your greatest joy: to give back to themselves…even in their darkest hour.”
– adapted (slightly) from Neale Donald Walsch (‘Conversations with God 3’)

“There is neither east nor west, tribe nor ethnicity, male or female, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist. Christian nor Jew. There is only a God-filled humanity.”

“Together, let’s see how many people we can impact, uplift, empower, encourage and perhaps even inspire to reach their fullest potentials.”

These thoughts may be freely published.

About the submitter:
In his writings Craig strives in some small way to break down and economic, social, cultural and religious barriers. Craig believes that whilst we should celebrate our differences, what we share in the form of our common humanity is way more important than what divides us.

BEYOND THE MIND (a new book)

A look at at the overlap between the human mind and spirituality. No, a story that’s “unfolding and writing itself”. A true story that I could never imagine… nor one that I could write myself!

Sharing Some Thoughts on Spirituality from John Kehoe’s Book ‘Vision of Power and Glory’ (and from God and Formula One: “The Fastest Book in the World”)

What is RELIGION?:

In his book ‘VISION OF POWER AND GLORY’, John Kehoe examines the difference between spirituality and religion: Like him, I believe that you do not have to have any one particular belief to nurture yourself spiritually. It is not adopting a religion which is of critical importance; but rather by undergoing a spiritual awakening, which gives us comfort to get through the trials and tribulations of life. Why is that? Because all that religion is, is a set of beliefs. You adopt a set of principles or body of knowledge, eg.
Christian, Jewish, Malay, Indian, Buddhist, Muslim, etc. Anything at all…and hasn’t religion and other rigid dogmas caused so many wars over the years – from the beginning of man.

However, everyone is convinced there is the one true way (to truth and enlightenment) – that theirs is the only religion to hold. And this often causes strife in family’s and countries. But is there only one true religion which is correct? There is no one true way, I believe. There are as many ways as there are people to find God, the spirit of the Universe itself…and all that is good in life.

I believe that all religions can comfort and nourish the soul – as long as you are a true believer in the ALMIGHTY, a Power Greater than Oneself…and have FAITH in his will (or God’s plan for you or whatever you may wish to call Infinite Spirit). So religion in itself can be a very good thing.

Sharing Some Thoughts on Spirituality from John Kehoe’s Book ‘Vision of Power and Glory’

Submitter’s Note:
In my research on the link between the human mind and spirituality this piece was sourced from a most interesting book by John Kehoe. Whilst the submitter may not necessarily agree with all the author’s beliefs and writings, I am sharing what I consider the main points from this work in the spirit of stimulating discussion and questioning, as well as encouraging people to read this book and hope it may be helpful in finding their own spiritual path.

The following is an extract, which I may include in the book I’m currently writing (started today 10/25/2011) titled God and Formula”The fastest book in the world (see http://www.amazon.com/GOD-FORMULA-ONE-F1-ebook/dp/B005Z6BFX0/ref=sr_1_57?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319561401&sr=1-57

SPIRITUALITY:

What is spirituality?

Spirituality goes much deeper than religion. At least I believe so. It is the innermost sense of you. Spirituality is far more than what is in your heart – it is all of you: your heart, your soul and your entire BEING (including your spirit).

What is the Spirit?: Awaken to the spirit deep within you. The universe is pouring out to us all the time. Follow the spirit that leads to your heart. It’s a matter of our EVOLUTION as human beings. It belongs to every single human being – this feeling of belonging to the human race. The feeling of spirituality is pouring out to us and beckoning us to make the most of our lives through the power of the Alimghty. “Reborn Christians” often say they have this feeling. I truly believe there is more to life than myself. It is your own thoughts and beliefs which are all-important; but they are guided by ourselves and by the “Person/Higher Power” way up above us. I believe God, as the Ultimate Source gives us hints through thoughts entering our subconscious mind about what path to take, following our dreams (perhaps dreams far bigger than we could conceive on our own). Or people we meet along our path who can help us…and we in turn help them. I truly believe God, our Creator or whatever you may wish to call Infinite Spirit gives us the power of choice and to find a purpose for our lives.

And one day we will be able to see the fruits of our labours and our BELIEFS for ourselves. This is what keeps me going on my long and ardous quest as a writer.
Just like Odysseus from Greek mythology.

Reap, sow, then wait for the bumper harvest. It is sure to come. You too can plant that first seed to inner peace and serenity, joy, fullness, compassion for others, and especially love. Then see the fruits of the germination of your spirit, just like the rose bud blooms in spring.

With true spirituality your life will be filled with tranquillity and happiness. Spirituality is taught to us as a duty and obligation (we have to go to church and pray, otherwise ‘the devil’ will wreak havoc upon our lives); but it is a path that brings us great joy and enlightenment (or as John Kehoe calls it “enlightened self interest”), if we simply relax and TRUST the process and enjoy the journey. I believe this new feeling of serenity and calm acceptance can make us all become better sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, wives/husbands, parents – but more importantly, better human beings (even a more astute businessman, who makes a lot of money- if that is what you really want). Because with true spirituality every aspect of your being becomes enhanced. This feeling of spirituality is experienced deep within yourself. In your heart, but more in your soul, you feel a closeness to nature and to your CREATOR. It’s as if you are having a personal chat with Him. Then you will see the flowering of the bud …in time… in the spring-time.

A few short definitions to summarise and end off this section…

Religion is “living in order to die” – that is, preparing on earth for the next life. Spirituality is “living in order to live life to the fullest”. It’s a feeling of being at peace with oneself, a calm acceptance of oneself and our circumstances.

I believe those two definitions encompass the true differences between religion and spirituality.

Peace. it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. it means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
– author unknown

Remember to always strive for balance in your life: between your material wants and your desire for spirituality.

Getting a bit “heavy” in this section, Mr Philosopher. And a tiny bit of humor to end off this very serious subject that we have been looking at…

Religion is for those who fear going to hell; whilst spirituality is for those who’ve already been there.”
– anon

“There are those who spend all their time working, those who spend all their time dreaming, and those who dream for an hour a day before going to work to fulfill their dream. In the third category there’s virtually no competition, so that’s the way to go.”

“People fight and die for religion but they seldom live for religion.”
– former Indian Prime Minister, Jahrulal Nehru

“Only when one has been in the deepest valley, can a person know what it’s like to stand on the highest peak.”
– Richard Nixon
I love that one spoken ‘from the heart’ by “tricky Dickie”!

“When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world.
I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation.
When I found I couldn’t change the nation, I began to focus on my town.
I couldn’t change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my
family.
Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself,
and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself,
I could have made an impact on my
family.
My family and I could have made an impact on our town.
Their impact could have changed the nation and
I could indeed have changed the world.”

“There is neither east nor west, tribe nor ethnicity, male or female, Muslim,

“Let each one of us build bridges rather than barriers, openness rather than walls. Let us look at distant horizons together in a spirit of acceptance, helpfulness, co-operation and peace. Let our leaders look at the future with a vision – to see things not as they are, but what they could one day become.”

Let us build bridges rather than barriers, openness rather than walls. Rather than borders, let us look at distant horizons together…in the common spirit of the value and dignity of a shared personhood – our common humanity as citizens of planet earth.”
